King Amends Faulty Fielding BY STEVE PARKER Sports Editor USC freshman Steve King spoiled teammate Alan Hil liard's bid for a no-hitter in the final inning of Wednesday afternoon's game, but King made up for his miscue by lead ing off the bottom of the frame with a game-winning home run. King's solo blast gave the Gamecocks a 1-0 victory over Eastern Michigan in the first game of a doubleheader, but Carolina was not so fortunate in the second affair, losing 4-2. Hilliard held the visitors hitless for 6 1/ 3 innings of the first game, but when Eastern Michigan's Mike Ferguson knocked a fly to right-center rookie outfielder King, making a conversion from his high school position of catcher, mis judged the hall and allowed it to sail over his head for an easy double. Undaunted, Hilliard retired the next two Huron hitters and King made Hilliard's performance a one-hitter by end ing the game in USC seventh. Despite losing the no-hitter, Hilliard still placed his name in the Carolina record books by pitching his third shutout of the young season, tying him with Bobby Bryant, who achieved that mark in the 1966 campaign. Hilliard raised his pitching record to 4-0 on the year, with a sparkling earned run average of 1.64. In the second game, USC pitcher Allen Johnson could not continue Hilliard's mastery of the Eastern hitters and he surrendered four runs to the Hurons in less than four innings of mound work. Eastern scored first in the second when Chuck Petrico singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Gary Gentle reached on Eddie Ford's misplay of a ground ball, and was replaced by courtsey runner Tim Gulliver. His pinch running abilities were not so strong, however, as his failure to touch third on Terry Harrison's double resulted in an appeal play which limited the Hurons to one run on the hit. But Eastern scored twice more in the next inning and later added a fourth score. USC attempted a comeback in the late innings when Hank Small smashed~a two-run circuit clout, to halve the Gamecock deficit. Small was later provided the opportunity to tie the contest when he advanced to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, with two out and a runner on. But the USC long-ball threat was fanned on a 2-2 count and Carolina was handed the setback. Tuesday afternoon USC defeated Gardner-Webb, 6-3, partially because of the visitors' wildness on the mound as four USC hitters were hit by pitches, including three in a row in an inning in which USC pro duced three runs.
