Parker From Page 10 " passer--like Troup. The effect, without a doubt, was that Troup was out of the picture. After all, where does a dropback, pro-style quar terback fit into a veer offense? So Troup, with a year of eligibility remaining in his col legiate career has elected to remove himself from the col lege football picture, choosing instead to opt for a profes sional career. Because of Troup's remaining year with the colleges he can not play with the National Football League. (Unlike pro basketball and baseball, the football owners will not allow an individual to play ball until their college class has graduated.) And so, the 6-4, 218 quarterback will try his luck at the Canadian game, trying out with Calagary. ' The move was initiated by Troup; he recognized the fact that Carolina's football program was no longer designed for him and since he desired to play the pro game it was better to try out now rather than, in effect, waste a season on the Gamecock bench. And the move seems to be an extremely logical one, for Troup's abilities are suited more for the pro game than even a dropback collegiate game, especially one that requires him to run by design. Dietzel, after conferring with Troup, gave the Virginia transfer his release from the Carolina football program -something Troup required to play ball anywhere profes sionally. Dietzel recommends to pros "I recommended him to several of the pros," said Dietzel. "I think he has a real possibility for the pro game.. "He has tremendous assets for the pro game. His height, strong arm and ability with the dropback style are all in his favor," continued the coach. '"Troup had the best arm of any quarterback I ever coached," said Dietzel. "He threw the ball so hard that it was difficult to catch, really, he'll bruise you when he throws the ball. "I think the pros will really like him, after all, they pay guys to catch the ball," said Dietzel. And like that, Troup is gone from the USC football prog ram. All the hopes of the saving quarterback from the north died early last year, and now that quarterback himself has decided to go away. It may seem funny, but Troup's chances of landing a spot on a professional payroll are prob ably greater than they would have been had he attempted to regain his former role as a starter for the 4-7 football Gamecocks. --o-C-... ~ SHOWS Easy To Open 'AL'ETT 1-3-5 Gamecock ACADEMY Charge Account AWARD .0 i lding Best Picture (Limit) Best ACtress Best Actor SOUNDERi BRITTON S Cice ly Tyson * s-. Twenty-two southern schools comprised the tournament field. Following that event, the Gamecock golfers gained revenge on one of the teams which bested them in the classic as they turned back Georgia Southern in a head to-head battle for the Southern Bird Cup's inaugural competition. Coach Bill McClure has divided his Carolina track squad for an intra-squad meet Friday at the Weems Baskin track as a preview to the outdoor season. The season officially opens dur ing the spring holidays with a three meet trip to Texas and the first offi cial home appearance by the Gamecocks will be in the 11th annual Carolina State-Record Relays April 7. Other home meets are scheduled against Baptist Col lege April 10; Auburn and Florida State April 14; and Clemson April 17. McClure has named sprinters Jim Small and Milton Reid captains of the two teams for Friday's intra squad meet and will allow the two captains to enter performers in events as they wish. 10 sI BICY Quality European BI Manufactured ,By: Paris-Sport, Falcon-] In Col C A TE'S ( Box Cedar Terrace 6420 Sumtei 776 1:15 toO p .m. Currently he ranks third in scoring with 13.2 a game, and sec ond in rebounding to Shumate. The starting five is rounded out by Dwight Clay, a guard hitting for over 11 a game and forward Peter Crotty, who adds a mere 7.3 to the cause. After a dismal start for the sea son, with a 1-6 mark, Notre Dame seemed to mature as a unit and turn around, now having won seven of their last ten games, including five straight at home since their loss to tough UCLA there. Carolina comes of f a close victory over Fordham at the coliseum 77-72 for their 19th win of the year. With all five of the Gamecocks averaging in excess of 10 points a game, USC will probably provide as stiff a chal lenge to Notre Dame as they've seen on their home floor, with the excep tion of the Bruins. A win for the USC team would give Coach Frank McGuire his fifth straight season with 20 wins here at Carolina, an impressive number. rief The length of some of the runniflg events will be shor tened to alfow for gradual conver sion from indoor to outdoor dis tances. For example, instead of a 100 yard dash, sprinters will run 75 yards; the 440 will be shortened to 352 yards, the 880 to 660, the mile to 1,320 yards, and the 440 inter mediate hurdles to 330 yards. The high hurdles, two mile run and mile relay will be run at normal dis tances and there will be no changes in the field-events. Joining Small on team "A" will be Ron Adams, Bruce Stuart, Don Brown, Paul McLeod, Rebus Sheley, Wayne Thomas, Steve Landy, Billy Novo, Bill Bryan, David Turner, Jerry Morrison, Carlos Goodwin, Tommy Melton, Russell Jeffcoat, Dolph Bosse, Frank Cinnante and Wayne Phillips. Performing with Reid on team "B" will be Pat Fleming, Berle Stocks, John Brown, Dan Loschack, Bob Dempsey, Bob Day, Don Layden, Joe McCulloch, David McKee, Gibbes McDowell, Buck Thompson, Guy Hornsby, Randy Hall.
