J oyce BY JIM HERSH Asst. Sports Editor Remember the last couple games when Keyin Joyce almost refused to shoot unless he had an unmolested lay-up? And do you remember when he had two points in the whole first half against Vil lanova? Well, Wednesday night Kevin Joyce, the playmaker, turned back into Kevin Joyce, the shooter, and his 31 points helped Carolina beat Fordham 77-72 in a Coliseum game packed with pressure. Evidently Joyce, who said that the shots just weren't there against Vil lanova and then Stetson, when he had 12 assists, began to find the openings again. He hit 11 of 19 from the floor, many of them with Ken Charles, Frank Heyward or Walter Douglas, who all tried unsuccess fully to stop him, hanging on his arms. Such powerhouses as UCLA, twice, Marquette, Indiana, Michigan and Duquesne highlight John Shumate ...Irish's lucky find. their schedule, and the youthful Notre Dame squad managed to upset two of those squads on the road-Marquette and St. John's. But despite the teams that Notre Dame has been forced to do battle with, the Irish have compiled a winning record and going into their last contest they still retained hopes of receiving a bid to the National Invitation Tournament. Coach Digger Phelps, in only his second year at the Irish helm, elected to go with youth in an attempt to rebuild from last year's dismal 6-20 club. Starting four sophomores and a lone junior, Phelps' strategy has apparently paid off. Without a doubt, the standout player for Phelp's youth corps has been 6-9, center John Shumate. The sophomore star, who was forced to sit out all last year with a crippling leg injury, has rebounded to become the team's leading scorer at 20.2 points per outing. Shumate was probably the reason that Notre Dame recently upset St. John's as his domination of the boards with lay-ups and short turnaround jum pers produced a game-high 31 points in the 75-71 contest. But sophomore backcourtman Gary Brokaw has been as pleasant an addition to the team. Averaging 18.0 a contest, he is the man respon sible for the fast breaks that often spark the Irish, who frequently enjoy scoring streaks.
