Usc BY MARK LEARY Sports Writer The USC Rugby Club defeated NC State in a "grudge match" by the score of 7-3 here Saturday. The first 10 minutes started off fast and furious as both teams had excellent scoring drives but both fell short of a score by inches. Hard hitting and great defense dominated the first half as neither team gave up a try. Both teams capitalized on the other teams mis takes in the first half, though. The first to capitalize were the Gamecocks as Warren Muir hit on a fifteen-yard penalty kick. This three-point play came after NC State went offside on the play. A few minutes later Muir missed another chance at a three-ooint pen alty kick as his 45-yard try sailed inches under the crossbar. Captain of the team and player coach Dr. Jim Wynn said after the game; "We forced them (State) into Carolir develo By MARK LEARY Sports Writer No man has been more of a factor in developing USC's winning Rugby club than has Dr. Jim Wynn. Wynn started his Rugby career at the Medical College of Virginia. "I learned the fundamentals and basics of the game from a very knowledgeable coach from Rhodesia and he can be credited with making rugby a major part of my life." One of the most important parts of Wynn's rugby career came about in the spring of 1969. The Richmond Rugby club which he was playing for and captaining at this time won the Carling Cup which is one of the highest honors a rugby club in the United States can obtain. Also, his team beat the best team in the US at this time, the Washington club, 11-8. Wynn then came to USC as a pro fessor in the Pharmacy College.
