Gamecocks scatter Herd BY JIM HERSH Asst. Sports Editor Carolina rode the hot shooting of guards Mike Dunleavy and Kevin Joyce to an 88-71 win over Marshall, last night in the Colisum. The win, the Gamecock's thirteenth of the season, was Carolina's nineteenth consecutive victory at home. Marshall s record dropped to 12-6 with the loss. Dunleavy led all scorers in the game with 24 points, while Joyce, 18, Danny Traylor, 17, Brian Winters, 13, and Alex English, 12, all were in double figures for the Gamecocks. Traylor also pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked 8 shots, and English had 12 rebounds to control the boards for Carolina. Overall, USC held a wide advantage in rebounds, 62-47. Behind Dunleavy and Joyce, the Gamecocks opened a lead over the Thundering Herd early in the first half. Dun leavy made six of seven shots from the floor in the first half for 12 points, and the Gamecock captain was five of nine for 13 first-half points. When Dunleavy poured in a jump shot with eight minutes plus left in the initial half, Carolina opened their biggest lead of the half, 34-19. However, the Herd came back with eight straight to pull within seven, 34-27. In this space the Herd's usually high-scoring Ty Collins scored six of his game's 10 points. At the half Carolina led 43-37. A major factor in the game was that the Herd's 6-8 Randy Noll picked up four first-half fouls while attempting to keep the Herd in the game with 10 first-half points. When the second half started he was on the bench, and this was undoubtedly a factor as the Gamecocks began to open up their margin.
