The great h film rev BY TERRY DUGAS Without a doubt, there is a horror movie craze sweaping the world, the likes of which have not been seen since the 1940's. This craze, however, is as indicative of our pre of the 1940's. I spent Saturday afternoon watching three horror movies, "Vampire Circus" and "Countess Dracula" at Jefferson Square and "Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde" at the Fox. The common denominator of all three films was eroticism. "Countess Dracula" and "Dr. Jekyll and company" are not worth the effort of reviewing them, but "Vampire Circus" was an interest ing film, and it is indicative of the entire genre of horror eroticism movies (easy on the horror, please). Within three minutes of the movie, the pattern of blood and sex had been established. "One lust feeds the other," quoth the vampire. The remainder of the movie was spent juxtaposing the feeding of the vam pire and intercourse, occasionally with the two occuring at the same time. There were three seduction scenes, all of vampires seducing their victems, with heavy emphasis on their sexual motivation. This, coupled with a two minute dance symbolism of sex (as in "Virginia Wolf") between a verile young man We've got a .. . This movie led me to question the future direction of vampire films. What is the possibility of a truly horrorfying vampire movie as opposed to a truly erotic one? As far as the ledgend of vampireism is concerned, the erotic concept is the more psychologically logical approach. But, psychology is not my field, whereas I like to think that film is. From the standpoint of a dedicated horror fan, which I am (all critics are slightly psychotic), I was much more concerned with the revolutio nary idea of a young, sexy vampire as presented in "Vampire Circus." Thinking back to the hallicon days of Christopher Lee, I asked myself "should a vampire be verile and seductive or regal and enigmatic? Should mature charisma be subser vent to sex-appeal?" I say NO! The entire basis of vampire legends consists of a concept of a "Prince of Satin," one who is in league with the devil and all the menions of darkness. It is much more appropriate to see a stately count seduce his young victems through his daemonic powers than to see a young count just seduce his victems. The entire concept of motivational chaos and psychologi cal unease inspired in a good vam pire film was lost through the take over of sexual actractiveness from daemonic attractiveness. If you are another dedicated hor ror fan, it might be worth the time to see "Vampire Circus." The sett ings are very good, as is the plot concept as it is presented. The attractiveness of this movie, like all "monster" movies, lies in the fact that there is no danger of becoming involved with the horror of the film (as happens in "Psycho"). The audi ence is aloof from the action on the screen, and it pleases the ego to be able to sit and watch horrible things happen to other people without hav ing to worry about them -happening to you.
