Sports Editor Carolina's 83-64 victory over Michigan State Saturday night had the components of a good short story; included in the span of the 40-minute affair were both rising and falling action and, most notably, a turning point. "The change by Carolina from a zone to a man-to-man defense late in the first half was the turning point," said Michigan State Coach Gus Ganakas of Carolina'a strategy, which guided the Gamecocks from behind to a lead that they never relinauished. Trailing by as many as five points with minutes remaining prior to intermission, USC mentor Frank McGuire unleashed his leam on defense and they quickly claimed the lead, grabbing it for good on a driving layup by freshman guard Mike Dunleavy with 2:56 in the half. "We started in a zone but they took us out of that quick. We tried a 1-3-1, then wert to a 2-3, but they must face a lot of zones because they played against ours real well," explained McGuire. "We went to a man-to-man press and got ahead by five at the half." The seond half proved not to be nearly as exciting, as Carolina's defense held State to a .3115 shoot ing percentage while their own offense was gunning at a .556 rate for 45 markers to pull away with the contest. Dunleavy's basket, which gave USC the lead at 31-29 after the defensive strategy move, was his first score of the year. Ironically enough, it was immediately fol lowed by Casey Manning's first two points of the young season on a jump shot from the foul line. Dunleavy and Manning made up for their not scoring in the first two contests as the two reserve guards pumped in totals of 12 and eight points respectively. Four other starters joined Dunleavy in double figures as Danny Traylor led with 18, Kevin Joyce had 16, Brain Win ters had 13 and Alexander English added ten. (See DEFENSE, Page 14) Themm A.
