Sports Editor Kevin Joyce and Alexander Eng lish failed to dominate the Gamecock efforts in Carolina's 76 49 victory over Nevada-Las Vegas Monday night, but they discovered the results to be more satisfying. Joyce and English did not play any less effectively than they had in the season opening loss to Ten nessee. It's just that the remainder of the USC lineup rebounded off of porous performances to spark the Gamecocks to victory. Most noticable of the changes was Carolina's domination of the back boards as they handily out rebounded a tall Rebel lineup after being stifled on the board's by Ten nessee's smaller Volunteers. Danny Traylor paced the rebounding attack with 11 stray shots while English surpassed his first game total of seven by one rebound. Defensively the Gamecocks came through excellently. Often limiting the Rebel offensive players to just one shot and frequently mak ing that a poor percentage shot, UNLV responded by sinking just 20 of 71 attempts for an anemic shoot ing percentage of .282. UNLV's much-feared big men proved unable to crack the USC 1 3-1 zone as the 6-9, 6-10, 6-11 Rebel frontcourt combined to total 26 points. The Rebel forward clicked for 21 in their opener and averaged 36.7 as a frosh. Carolina's performance was not all defense and rebounding how ever. In fact, USC found Joyce and English, who each scored in double figures in the opener, joined by Traylor and Winters. Joyce hit for 18 points, the game high total, before retiring to the sideline with about five minutes remaining with Nothing for UNLI BY BILL GRANT Sports News Editor "We just didn't play well at all. South Carolina came out of the dressing room ready to play ball and we weren't ready at all. We fell behind to a good team early and just couldn't play catch up ball." Things just didn't go right all night for John Bayer, the 11 year veteran coach of the Nevada-Las Vegas Rebels. "The strong parts of our game seemed to desert us tonight," com mented -Bayer refering to outside shooting and rebounding. "We just didn't have it tonight." The Rebels shot a miserable .282 from the field and were out rebounded by the smaller Gamecocks, 51-41. "Traylor played a strong game underneath tonight and his experi ence certainly showed itself out there. He has improved quite a lot since I last saw him. The boards were the big difference in the game, coupled with our turnovers, shoot ing and the number of fouls we com mitted. "Part of our shooting diffuculties can be attributed to South Carolina's defense, of course. The * FLANNEJ * PEACOAM * DINGO E * NAVY DE * LEVIS' MOEI1 B ritche Ayce YU win a minor injury. Traylor was quite effective with 17 markers, most obtained on per fect assist passes from the Gamecocks guards after the big man had broken to the basket from the outside post position that he was handling of offense. Winters, unable to buy a basket in Tennessee, tallied for 15 points, while English poured in 13 points. (Please see CAROLINA, Page 7, Column 3) yoes right Bayer job they did on Baker was fantastic" Baker, the former flash from the Philadelphia school-yards, was con stantly harrassed by the USC 1-3-1 zone, and could manage only ten points. TUNLV's super-sophomore averaged 37.7 points sin his first year. Baker couldn't remember the last { time he had been held to ten points, "probably in high school. Everywhere I went I had some body on me, and when I was open I didn't shoot well at all," com mented Baker after hitting on only three of 20 field goals attempts. Bayer was also concerned about his team's failure to get the ball inside to the Rebel's big men, 6-10 Dan Weimer 6-11 Dan Cunningham and 6-10 Toby Houston who could manage only seven shots between them, sinking two. "Basically our attack is not geared to our centers, but you got to have more than four points out of them." As for Carolina, Bayer sees the Gamecocks with enormous poten tial. "Right now I wouldn't go as far as to say their as good as last years team. But in time they can be. That's the only thing they need now, experience, they have the talent."
