'Messiah' Pleasing To senses BY TERRY DUGAS A Review "Savage Messiah," now play ing at the Gamecock 2 theater in Cayce, is the first film by Ken Russell since his illegitimate "The Boyfriend." Thank God the lineage has been re established. Russell has now returned to the making of biog raphies although, in "Savage Messiah," he is woefully rusty. Henry Gaudier, an artisticly stagnant sculptor, meets Sophie Brzeska, a spiritually stagnant woman who is 20 years his senior. The platonic relation ship that develops between them provides Gaudier with the inspiration needed to develop a style of art that was to become known as the Vorticist move ment, and enables Sophie to cul tivate an inner balm which, in turn, sustains her when Gaudier is killed in World War I at the age of 23. A fine opportunity existed in this film to develop a motif dea ling with the terrible waste of war, but, it appears that at the beginning of filming, Russell forgot what his theme was and ambled off into the wasteland of amorphism. Even the analogus Christ concept, as evi denced by the title, is ignored until the very end where Rus sell then pulls it out of his hat and surprises the audience with another contemporary martyr. Russell also confronts, albeit in a highly stylized fashion, the women tights and labor reform movements that were develop ing at the time. The point at which Russell becomes just too, too gauche, however, occurs when he encounters in a night club, sub tly called the Vortex, a genera tion living with total abandon. During this entire sequence, I was expecting Joel Gray to appear. He would have been a refreshing similarity. Despite the muddled thema tic treatment, I did enjoy the movie, for Russell almost makes up for his indecisiveness with his superior cinemag raphic technique. Without a doubt, Russell is the American master of film composition. Although his visual devices are not thematically entwined like Visconti, Russell still has the eye for settings and angles which turns this weak movie into a less weak one. This review is, perhaps, unnecissarily severe because of rememberences of past works by Russell. "Savage Messiah" is an enjoyable movie, pleasing to the senses and containing occa sional flashes of pre "Boyfriend" Russell. It is well worth the price of admission, especially with a dis count card, and I would be most unhappy if I turned anyone away with this review. If you do not go with great expecta tions, you will not be disap pointed.
