They were ready for us, sky high for this meet," commented USC head swimming coach Alan Gentry. The Gamecocks defeated the Seminoles 70-43, a year ago at the USC pool. The Gamecocks, who never led during the contest, lost the meet on the next to last event, the three meter dive. Larry Shoeman, a junior from Boyton Beach Fla., clinched the FSU win as well as qualifying for next spring's NCAA champion ships by racking up 284 points and edging Carolina's Gary Wetherhold. Shoeman also took the one-meter dive event and was the only Seminole swimmer to win two events. Kim Douglas, a sophomore from Columbia, was awarded the 'Gamecock of the Meet' against the Seminoles. Douglas gook the 200 yard breastroke contest in what Gentry called a "big upset" against an All America and national qualifier opponent from Florida State. Schmidt was not the only Gamecock to set records against Florida State. Chip Newman set sophomore records in both the 200 and 100 free style, the latter of which he won. Bob Warner set a junior record in the rugged 1,000 free any only finished third, an indi cation of the competition in the meet.
