University of South Carolina Libraries
Officials bungle TO THE EDITOR: Please don't knock USC Student Body President David Spinazzolo editorially for his efforts to bring some semblance of reason and pre dictability to the goings-on of the administration at this school. Spinazzolo and his followers are apparently the only ones who realize-and care enough to do something about-what some of us have suspected was wrong with Carolina all along. It is my opinion that the priorities of this school are poorly estab lished. At the risk of being labled a fussbudget, I submit to you the following: The University of South Carolina has a "showcase" football stadium replete with a luxurious housing development for the athletes, but let an ordinary student try to park on or near campus and he finds there are nowhere near enough parking lots. The administration recently installed an expensive ($10,000) "s culpture" at the Humanities Com plex when almost every dorm on campus is over-run with roaches. Should a student want a coffee or Coke at the Gamecock snack bar he finds that the wait is exces sive-while the management laughs and jokes about it. (Inciden tally, apparently the same is true of the food service on the first floor of the Russell House where the food is reportedly less than a culinary delight.) Students are forced to wait in long lines to get tickets to athletic events and invariably waste precious time while officials bungle the distribu tion system. The administration is hard at work developing a new library which is to its credit, but for the longest time the air-conditioning system at the undergraduate Lib rary didn't even work. Now that cooler weather is upon us the sys tem has been turned on full blast. The administration is planning the construction of a new swimming pool when in fact it has publicly ack nowledged that the campus is poorly lit at night-making stu dents, faculty and staff the target of innumerable dangers. The list goes on ad nauseam. Thank you for your indulgence. MARSHALL SWANSON STUDE! Pizza SPAGHE'l Served with gal Buy one Serving Wednese Located at intei 0 across frol -Voice of t] Fornication enduro? TO THE EDITOR: Why don't we dispense of all the preliminaries and get right down to the main event. Why do we have to waste so much time on sexuality contests and "penis projections." Why can't we organize a fornication enduro?! Man versus woman, in the only true "battle of the sexes." Such a contest would provide an outlet for all the students here at USC to not only voice, but indeed act out their true feelings. Think of what it would do for potential suicides at USC. At least, all Carolina men would be able to openly de-virginize the coeds. And, long overdue, women could freely and from such "formulated opinionizers" as Helen Gurley Brown and Germaine Greer, strike down the erected stability of all men, castrating them to their impotent and natural state. Woul dn't we be too busy to wrestle with the administration over such unrighteously pressing issues as closing streets and playing in the traffic. It'd give the administration a break-after all, their building a tunnell under Assembly ST. before England and France build one under the English Channel. But, then too, nobody ever swam across Assembly St. J. TOM FUNDERBUNK Get right with God TO THE EDITOR: In answer to those who have criticized my stand on abortion and my using the Bible to back it up, I would like to say that in the age -we live in, truth is a very unpopular thing. People seem to get up tight when one calls black, black, and white, white. They would rather you take the middle of the road and try and please everybody and be wishey washy. What people do not realize is truth is the only answer to any problem and Jesus is truth. As for the Bible whether it is truth or not, I do not need to defend God or His word. It has stood through centuries of ridicule and efforts to destroy it and yet it still prevails and is respected even by many who deny its author. What started this whole situation was your detailed report on this IT NIGI How 'TI $1.54 rlic, bread and chef salad. linner - get one free Iay 3 p.m. 'til midnig section of 378 and 1-26 n the Ramada Inn lie people e-eX abortion and the attitude of the wri ter and the girl. Not only did the article condone such action as forni cation and abortion but seemed to be trying to make it easier for those who do get involved. What you should have said that if the girl had not violated one of God's laws in the first place, she would not have found it necessary to commit the second mistake. But as long as people can satisfy to their own thinking that either God does not exist or that the Bible is not the word of God, they can condone their wrongs and make them seem right to others. As for the coed, she still can make it right with God by repenting and truly getting her life right with God because God still does save repen tant sinners if they really mean bus iness but as I stated in the other let ter, only God can give true repen tance and only does when a person deals honestly with him. This is the last letter I will write on this subject because I have made my beliefs known and do not intend to continue this controversy any longer. BOB ECKHARDT Pray for Eckhardt TO THE EDITOR: My response to the letter of a Mr. Robert Eckhardt in a recent issue of The Gamcock is this: I, too, am a Christian, and I'm almost ashamed to be called the same thing this man professes to be. I didn't see the article by the girl who had an abortion; I'm not a stu dent (though an alumna), and rarely see The Gamecock. But I don't really need to read her story to say what I need to say. This man, Eck hardt, is speaking to us out of his own desperate need. He is no authority or Voice of God. Since he likes to quote Scripture so much, it is amazing to me that he has missed the whole point of that Book he quotes! God, or Jesus, is you would, clearly reaveals over and over that the basic qualities of a whole life are love and forgiveness. If this girl does have moments of guilt over her act, how do we help her (and others in her place) by heaping a greater load of guilt upon her heart? How much better to say, if you feel guilty there is One who can relieve you. She need not "have this action on her conscience for all eternity," as our self-proclaimed prophet announces triumphantly. There is a Way to be healed, if hea ling is what you need. The girl may have sinned (I shall not say she DID for I am not God and do not claim to know), but nowhere in my Bible can I find even a hint of a God who loves one person less than another. This girl is loved by God (and, incredibly, so is Mr. Eckhardt), neither because of or in spite of things they do, but because they are. I cannot sit back calmly and watch spiritual torture and condemnation meted out in the name of Christ. His name is also LOVE, and in my opinion the girl who sacrificed her self, poured out her soul to us and spared her parents and an unwanted child has shown move love than this ernest prophet. To any who read his letter and may have had thoughts such as this: "If that's what Christianity is, count me out," I now speak to you. Do not be hasty in your disgust to write off Christianity because of the mis guided words of one man. This is not what Jesus Christ is like, and this is not what you will be like if you serve Him. There are many other ways to go in Christianity than the hard and lonely road this frantic man blazes for himself. Frankly, I believe he needs our prayers far more acutely than this one brave and humble co-ed. GAIL E. MULLIS ...............................
