Dr. Jerome H. Jaffe, who directs the White House Special Action Office for Drug Abuse Prevention, said a dose of the new drug would provide "immunity" to heroin for 24-hour period. Jaffe said the new drug, which is yet unnamed, could be used to replace methadone, a controversial and addictive drug that presently is used most widely in treating heroin addicts. The new drug, which is in a class of compounds called "narcotics antagonists," is totally nonaddic tive, Jaffe said. He said it could be used on three typed of addicts - those who don't want to use methadone, those who 'It may not be but it A former USC student, Gordon George, was arrested Friday in front of Russell House for posses sion of "a controlled substance," a police spokesman said. "This means the drug in posses sion was not readily identifiable to the arresting officers, and he had no prescription for it. Jaffe did not describe the new drug, which has the laboratory clas sification of EN 1639A, as a sub stitute for methadone or as a panacea for heroin addiction. Jaffe said development of the new drug began 16 months ago, but tests on animals and synthesization had to be completed before its release. He described the drub as cance ling out the effects of heroin brain cells. He indicated that a problem in getting heroin addicts to take the new drug may arise beacuse, unlike methadone, the drug does not give the user a high.. .
