An inevitable t Biddie. BY JIM HERSH Sports Writer Saturday night's freshman football game between Carolina and Virginia Tech ended in the only conceivable way it could have-a tie. Considering the amount of errors, physical and mental, that were made in the game, no one deserved to win. Both teams spent the better portion of the game trying to prove that it could make more mistakes than the other, and when the players ran out of mistakes the coaches made a few of their own. Bob Ryan, the Biddies youthful coach, made the biggest blunder in the last few seconds to grant VPI a reprieve from what seemed like certain defeat. With the score tied at 24 and 22 seconds remaining in the game, USC had the ball on the VPI 11 and one time-out left to use. Bobby Marino, who had kicked a 43 yard field foal earlier, was pacing on the sidelines waiting for a chance to win the game. He never got the opportunity because the Biddies made the unexcusable error of running a couple of meaningless plays and allowing the clock to run out on themselves. Instead of calling time-out and sending Marino into the game after one running play, USC tried to squeeze another run in with nine seconds left. When Russ Jackson, who ran for 191 yards on the night, was.stopped at the three the Biddies made a mad scramble to call time-out, but it was too late-the game was over. There was no obvious reason for the extra two running plays and Ryan was left on the hook for blowing a game that should have been won. To his credit the first year coach made no attempt to shove the blame aside. "It was just damn dumb coaching," he said, still in a daze, after the game. "We got greedy and tried for six when we could have won it with three." But mistakes were not scarce in this game and it was simply inevitable that someone would make a big mistake to lose the game, or at least a chance to win the game. They pushed VPI all over the field, rolling up 343 yards on the ground, but when it came to the big play the Biddies always seemed to give the Gobblets the big break. In the second quarter USC led 10 0 when they started their charitable ways. Up to this point, VPI had had no success offensively as the Biddie defensive line shut off the ground game and rushed the passer hard to stop the passing game. Then with 34 seconds left in the half VPI quarterback Jerry Kinsey rolled out to avoid the rush and threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Billy Hardee, who was so wide open that he walked in from the five like an old man out for a Sunday stroll in the park. For the rest of the game the VPI passers, either Kinsey or Steve Mathiseson, avoided the hard Biddie rush by rolling out and had no trouble finding receivers standing somewhere in the USC secondary by themselves. Every time VPI went to pass, the USC defensive backs scrambled around looking as though they had no idea what was happening. It appeared as though a Chinese fire drill was taking place in the Biddie secondary. Early in the third quarter VPI took the lead when Kinsey spotted tight end Kevin Dick for a 24-yard touchdown. Dick was actually well covered, Gary Mott and Henry Laws were standing right beside him, but neither one went for the ball or the receiver.
