Fac Carolina's freshman running back Russ Jackson readies himself for a meeting with Citadel defensive back Billy Rogers. Citadel's defense had very little Another gooc could spell bc BY STEVE PARKER Asst. Sports Editor If Carolina's baseball Gamecocks could add two or three freshmen players each year who would bolster the team attack the way Hank Small, Eddie Ford and Earl Bass did last season then the program here would appear to be destined for national status. As freshmen, Small broke nearly every major batting record at USC, Ford supplied superb defensive play at shortstop and Bass moved into the premier position on the pitching staff. According to Coach Bobby Richardson the Gamecocks may have again added a bumper crop of first year players who could move into positions of prominence such as the frosh trio of last season. "We've got Steve King, a catcher, playing right field now," said Richardson, "And all the clubs were after him." "It's hard to take Drew Choate out of the lineup, he caught all last year without making a single error. Still, we need King's bat in the lineup so we have him in the outfield presently," added Richardson "Al Worthington, son of the former major leaguer, is a freshman who was originally a short stop, but he's at second base and he looks real good. He's hurt right now but he should be ready in a couple weeks," said the USC coach. "He'll play either third, second or the outfield. If he's as good as they say he is, we'll find some place for him," said Richardson. "He could give Bruce Pudlock a real fight for his third base job. "Although we have two or three shortstops, we have no plans to move Ford out." The pitching staffs have been strenghtened by the addition of some new hurlers. "Al Johnson was 10-1 at Wingate last year and he should do well; David King from Atlanta had a good record last year. "These two should round out the pitching staff," said Richardson, "Both are right-handers and will replace right-handers Phil Houston and Larry Erbaugh who both graduated." The Gamecock field manager also discussed a few of the other changes occuring since last year. "June Raines has left to take a job in the Phillies farm system as a catching co-h and John Hunton, will move into the position of assistant coach," said Richardson. "We've been working out every day lately," said Richardson. "We'll play a scrimmage game against Baptist College here Friday at 3:00, but after Friday we'll taper off the workouts until about mid January." ers, Jethro Tull Oct. 19th 8:00 P.M. Jackson Special Service Biddies tough' BY JIM HERSH Sports Writer After his Biddies beat Ap palachian State, 48-10, in the I opening game of the season, Coach < Bob Ryan said that "the schedule gets tougher and tougher each week." I Last Thursday, even though losing to the Biddies, 33-17, the t Citadel proved to be stronger than j Appalachian. In the game two USC starters were injured, which is a indicative of the tough play. If Ryan's "they get tougher a every week" proclamation con- f tinues to hold true the Biddies are t in for their stiffest challenge of the season when they play the Virginia Tech frosh Saturday in William8 Brice Satdium. The Gobblers have played two games this season, splitting decisions to Maryland and Virginia Military. They lost, 14-12, to the Terps and beat VMI, 20-3. The most impressive facet of the Biddie game has been their run ning game. They are averaging slightly over 225 yards per game on c the ground, including 132 by one player, Russ Jackson. y After a comparatively modest 42 t yard output against Appalachian, Jackson was benched in favor of 9 Randy Chastain for The Citadej o game. He entered the game early g and ran wild, gaining 223 yards. t Jackson denied that the benching had any effect on his running. "Not starting didn't bother me at all," o0 said Jackson following the game. ai "Chastain deserved to start. He's a d real good runner." bi There is no doubt that Jackson will start on Saturday. Chastain is trying to shrug off an ankle injury, to but whether Chastain is available yt or not, Jackson will start. cl What with all the Biddie running Ti power, the quarterbacks have not been forced to put the ball in the air by very often. Ryan has a trio of sh quarterbacks, and will start Jeff Grantz for the third time, with Zeb Shue and John McElveen on the ' bench. All have seen action in both tY games. ti: fr Defensively the freshmen have gi had no trouble keeping the op- W position from out-scoring the SI spectacular Biddie offense. It's hard to rgue with success and in both ames the defense held and llowed the offense to score the irst points of the game, starting he two Biddle wins. Bob Ryan ...seeks third victory The Citadel might have un overed a weakness in the USC efense when they passed for 222 ards on the Biddies. A few passes at were not thrown all that well ot through to Citadel receivers, aaking one wonder if the passing am&might be the way to score on e USC freshmen. "I thought we missed a lot of pen field tackles," Ryan admitted ter The Citadel game. 'The 4fense was loose around mid-field it when it came down to the big ays we were tough." The Biddies will probably have play their best game of the yng season on Saturday. VIP's ose game to Maryland is pecially impressive since the rps are accelerating their ogram under a new coach, and beating VMI, the Gobblers have own that they can win. But the Biddies also have shown at they can win, and for the first me this football season, varsity or eshman, two teams going into the ime with wins during this season ill play at Williams-Brice adium.
