Shirley Chisholm will be the
speaker at a rally sponsored by S.
C. Young Democrats Friday night.
"This is a voter registration
rally," said Doug Dent, "and it has
three main purposes. It's a
culmination of all registration
activities since the last day to
register to vote is Oct. 7, it'll raise
a little money to pat off the
organization's two year old debt;
and it's a general boost to
Democratic candidates all over the
state."
The rally will start with a bar
beque supper at 6;30 and Chisholm
will speak around 8, Dent said.
Admission is $2.50 for students
and $5 for non-students, and the
location will be at the National
Guard Armory across from the
football stadium.

A University of South Carolina
graduate student fell off his feet
last summer and broke a rib.
That's no gag. Jim Sparger, a 27
year-old former Army brat spent
the summer months falling off a
bridge spanning the Rio Grande
River in New Mexico. A
professional stuntman, Sparger
never has been hurt in any of his
planned jumps, falls, spills, leaps
or dives. "I cracked the rib
because I lost my balance after
landing on my feet and hit the
ground the wrong way," Spareer
explained.
Sparger, who calls New Mexico
home, wandered into Columbia
this fall with a degree in theatre
from New Mexico State Univer

surfaced in South Carolina,
Sparger laconically replies that
"...I heard about the theatre
program at USC, made a few
phone calls, decided it was the
place to be and went."
Since his arrival here, Sparger
has been busy training a group of
USC Theatre performers in the art
of stage fighting which is called for
in the production of Dale
Wasserman's explosive drama
"One Flew Over the Cukoo's

all concerned.
The grunts and groans are real
enough but the expressions of
excrutiating pain on the faces of
the actors is faked. There is no pain
and there are no injuries despite
the appearance of calculated intent
to maime.
"If you do these things wrong,"
sparger says with conviction,
"you'll get hurt. My job in this
show is to make sure the guys do it
right."
Sparger refuses to describe in
detail the techniques he uses for his
staged fights. "If I talked about
them," he says, "someone is sure
to try it and get themselves hurt.
This is the kind of thing that
demands personalized in
