US( BY DOUG WILLIAMS - Sports Editor Carolina will be hoping to make a number of abrupt changes in their ways Saturday night against Memphis State. To begin with, it is hoped that the Gamecock offense will see a little bit more action than in last weekend's 21-0 loss to Mississippi. Then it would be nice to see a couple of sustained drives or a few long plays from scrimmage. But above all, it would be especially nice to win the game. As an illustration of how much the defense played in the Ole' Miss game, senior defensive back Neville Files participated in 102 plays. He was in on every defen sive and kicking play. Meanwhile, the offense ran just over 40 plays from scrimmage. The Gamecocks have been outrushed 560 yards to 102 in three straight defeats. Of the team's 37 first downs, only seven have been by ground. Six Carolina passes have been intercepted. Mel Baxley has the only USC steal. So indeed, it just might be time for a change. Memphis State has had what might be termed a hot-and-cold year-although its season is only two games old. In the opener, the Tigers threw a scare into Mississippi before bowing 34-29. But the following Saturday, perennial national threat Drake. dropped State, 23-7. Despite the loss of both Paul Gowan and Ray Jamieson in the backfield, first-year coach Fred Paicoast .has talented runners in Dan Darby and Dornell Harris. Darby has scored two touchdowns while rusing for 107 yards, while Harris has produced 103 yards. Al Harvey is again at quar terback, where he has completed 20-43 aerials for 216 yards and two scores. Winning their first meet, 23-32 over Clemson, last week on the three-mile course at Sesquicen tennial, the Gamecocks hope to be equally successful on the park's five-mile course, which will be employed for the Tech meet. "Their best runner is a sophomore," said McClure, "but they lost all of their other runners from graduation." So far this year Tech has run in only one meet, a six-mile in vitational at Stone Mountain, and finished second. McClure will have the same seven runners at the starting line for the Yellow Jackets as he did for Clemson. Injuries have slowed one Gamecock and completely stopped another runner. Thomas' training was slowed by a foot ailment, although he did not miss a meet. However, sophomore Mike Sheley, who ran with last year's team and was a top half-miler for the track squad, missed the Clemson meet with a sprained ankle and will not run against Tech. -SHOP Springers, Tanks, Fork t. Sophomore Buck Thompson has been moved into the starting right tackle spot. Junior Rick Anthony returns to left guard and Jerry Witherspoon is at right guard. While the offensive has been spotty on occasion, the defense has played well and with a certain degree of consistency. Senior linebacker Rick Brown has made 25 tackles and 11 assists. Dana Carpenter is close behind with 23, while John LeHeup and Mel Baxley each have 14. Troup has been the Gamecocks' most powerful offensive threat, hitting 32-73 passes for 402 yards, though suffering five interceptions. He will be looking to rebound from a long evening against Ole' Miss, when he completed just 4-20. In any event, Saturday night's game will be a battle between two teams searching for their initial win of the season. And the way things have been going for each, a tie is not out of the question. A few more tips. Never ride up or down a curb. At best, you beat up the wheels of your bike, at worst, yourself. If this is your first bike with hand brakes, spend some time getting used to them. Devote your first ride up and down your street to little more than putting the brakes on. Little is more disconcerting than getting into your first tight spot and trying to stop with a coaster brake when you don't have one. ** MIKE SHELEY ....suffers sprained ankle BLOOD DONORS NEEDED!
