With three quarterbacks returning from last year's varsity squad and the most successful freshman candidate listed on the depth chart, experience and depth will not be lacking at the vital position. Seniors Al Harvey and Rick Strawbridge are given the edge is passing talent over junior John Robinsin and sophomore Ken Tyler.Harvey is given the starting assignment because of his running abilities and consistency at the position. On the receiving end of the Tiger aerials will be what Pancoast says may possibly be the best pass catching duo in the nation. Senior Stan Davis latched onto 34 passes last year for 5 scores while sophomore. James Thompson hauled in 32 for an equaling total of 5 touchdowns for the freshmen squad. On any given day passing combos fail to click but Pancoast has little reason to panic should his ever faulter. His Tiger runners form the other half of Memphis' double-potent offensive attack. Gone from last year's backfield is Pdul Gowen, but in his place is fullback Paul Wilson who averaged an impressive 7.6 yards a carry. At tailback is a 5.7 yard a trip man Dornell Harris. Offensive-minded Pancoast and his talent-loaded offensive squad would appear to be forming an attack which could prove over powering to Tiger foes. But Pancoast has been around football long enough to know that no football team ever won on just a strength of offense. "Once you put on the hat of a head coach," the ex assistant said, "You have to have a good defense. "If there is to be an accent, it would be defense," said the Tiger coach. Although the Tiger offense suffered the loss of a major star in Gowen, the defensive unit suffered greater losses and dropped in their depth factor. Of the five leading tacklers on the 1971 squad only one returns, in the person of junior defensive tackle Glenn Whit tiemore, who hauled down 51 op ponents to place fourth on last year's team statiscally. Linebackers are the key to the Tiger 4-4 defense as three starters find themselves in their familiar positions halting offenses once again. Carl Mulwee and Butch Smith form the strength of this quartet. Graduation reduced the secondary numbers, but super soph Everett Taylor shows the promise to step into stardom. In spot play as a freshman tailback the talented athlete averaged 13.2 yards for a total of 170. Despite some glimmers of hope the overall outlook for this defensive unit which will find three sophomores among its numbers, is dismal. Inexperience has surrendered more than one touch down and too much inexperience is often impossible to disguise and protect. SPancoast may find his offense immobile in some contests, such as the Tennessee and Mississippi affairs, while his defense may be doing a lot of moving--backwards. Still the powerful Memphis State offense should outscore the .~'defensive totals in a majority of the Tiger outings.
