People trying to work together, somtimei planping together to program for the entiri campus, according to Union president Barnel Oliver. .' The main purpose of the Union is to provic: entertainment, recreational and educationa programs for USC students through its 1i committees. The Union, the most heavily funde4 organization on campus, is- responsible to concerts, Russell House film series, trave programs, lecture series, and numerous othei campus activities. As one Union committee member put i1 "People don't realize that everyday the Unioi is doing something for them. There is alway some activity planned." The first big Union event this year will b Dead Week -- Aug. 27 through Sept. 4. Oliver emphasized that everyone is a fe member of the University Union and anyone is welcome to work with one of the Committees. pl "There are committees for lust about m anyone's interest," he said. "If you are more in intellectually oriented there are the lectures and arts committees, but if you just want to pi play around but get things done there is the special events committee," Oliver said. Short Corn Somet) The University Union will be trying to get the Short Course "out of the rut" this fall with an enlarged and revamped program. Richard Moore, Short Course chairman, said "We have cut away the old ones and brought back the courses that people like, but over half of this fall's programs will be new." At least 30 short courses will be offered this fall and Moore predicts that more may be added. Lovemaking, barkeeping and other favorites will be back but programs in contemporary politics, gay consciousness, effective reading, numerous dance courses, and according to Moore, "lust about any course a student wants." Oliver said there is a little different dlosophy this year and more attempts will be ade to reach individuals and keep the people dividualized. "I guess you could say we are trying to ap. aI to the spirit of the students," Oliver said. Students interested in joining one of the Mion committees may apply at the Union fice in the Russell House or contact a Union ember. "Just go up and tell them you are interested working for the Union -- tell them you want to involved -- and most Union members will vite you to their committee meeting," Oliver id. ses: ting for everyone of non-credit courses open to students for the asking. If someone has an interest in something he has never been able to fit into his schedule, Short courses may have the answer. Students, professors, businessmen all have a hand at teaching and relating their particular field. But this spring Short Course will take a new approach by moving toward a free University concept. More of the courses will be designed around a seminar approach in which no one really leads. Moore also said that the program will be greatly expanded in the spring to as many as 75 courses.
