The Highway Department's latest proposal on the widening of Pickens Street provides for the prohibitation of westward turns onto Green from Pickens Street once Pickens has been enlarged. No traffic would be allowed to turn off Pickens Street toward the Russell House. The Highway Department also said that if enough complaints are received concerning the restricted turning off from Pickens, then the Highway Department would again allow traffic to turn onto Green. Highway Department officials maintain it will be students who will complain and demand the restriction be removed. Smith, on the other hand, said the Highway Department could withdraw the prohibited turn signals at any time and greatly increase the traffic on Green Street, thus making it more difficult for students to cross in front of the Russell House. inggets grant of Nursing has S. degree in nursing. Students will be pursuing the Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) degree at USC for the first time. The program will be administered by the College of General Studies, which has a new dean, Dr. Harry E. Varney. Varney, a former assistant to the president at USC and also a former director of USC's Florence Regional Campus (now Francis Marion College). said the new offering will "provide avenues for completing a four-year bac calaureate degree to those students who might not otherwise finish their degree work in a conventional curriculum." Enrollment in the new program is expected to be limited to 100 students in the first year of operation. Varney said, and the limitations will be adjusted in the next few years based on demands and resources. The new degree offering at Carolina will have no specified curriculum: instead, each student's course of study will be outlined by consultation between the student and an advisory committee made up of an ad ministrative staff member from the College of General Studies plus two faculty members from other colleges and schools of the University.
