Vive 1'1 (Continued from page 7) And so ever again I ask, my crepe suzett why people wonder when intellectuals go on rampage, foaming and rending their hair at ti paradox of theory and action. We have, say, great answer for the goals of all ethics and tt future of mankind but not the will to kill for I We see time too short for the Ghandi metho We ponder. We wonder what is to become of u May I not act for a greater benefit? What is tt suffering of the few t', the many if it will sa% the whole? My hubris is immaculately co ceived. Socratic voice says, "Yes, you've got right," but intellect cannot put such a cor plicated truth to words and so doubts. Conflic Action needs faith. Great action, decisive a tion, bloody action, needs fanaticism. As it tellectual, as artist, as cultural prism, how ca I play a role I so despise, that's so unclean? Masses, however, are idiots who need a goc leader. No action, and they elect bad tyran unwise ruler who sees nothing. Am I bound i destroy in order that I create--lead ini greatness and Total Awareness--destroy th present entropic fabric utterly with its a tendant assumptions on production, cor sumption, ecology, life and death? Are there n visions of immortality? Must I violate sacre ethical principles to serve others more sacre and more universal, more cosmic? He puts a hand on the Emperor's arm and tries to comfort the old man. The Emperor turns to his son, his hand clutching at the gold cloth over his heart, and gasps in a whisper, "It's alright. It doesn't really matter. Nothing matters anymore.") The Emperor abruptly turns and takes his t jade cane--its emerald head glowing with light and walks out of the bedroom through a pair of open, ornately carved mahogany doors. Through those doors the dauphin watched his - father, the Emperor, walk down the long, long, i black-veined marble hall of mirrors. Mirrors on either side. From far away on the grounds of i the palace itself he caught the swelling chords of the Marseillaise from thousands of voices. y Now the thundering cries of "Vive I' Empereur ! > Vive l'Empereur!" and he knows they have y seen his father and knows also they will have . with them a white mare--saddled and ready--in futility. And he know his Emperor would I think upon Waterloo.
