Pickens SI By SCOTT DERKS The battle for the two-block area of Pickens Street that runs through the campus seemed to be in its waning stages, but Student Govern ment officials say that the fight has just begun. One of the biggest struggles may not be with the S. C. Highway Department, but between Student Government and Harold Brunton, vice president for business affairs. David Spinazzolo, student body president, said he was surprised to learn that Brunton had requested City Council to approve a com promise Pickens Street proposal made by the Highway Department recently. "We had agreed to have Brunton ask City Council if they would allow the Highway Department's plan but we did not know he was going to recommend the plan," Spinazzolo said. "In the letter he sent to City Council he kept saying the University, ...that seems to be pretty presumptuous of him. Who in the hell is the University? Brunton isn't representing me or my constingency which make up a vast majority of this educational institution," Spinazzolo said. The Highway Department proposal provides for the prohibition of westward turns onto also provides that if enough complaints are received concerning the restricted turning off Entertainment i THURSDAY. Highway Department officials believe that it will be students who complain and demand the restrictions be removed. H-w the traffic pattern will be set up following the widening of the street is not im mediately known and is under study at present. In addition the Highway Department has agreed to increase lighting not only for Pickens Street but for the pedestrian areas leading into and across Pickens Street and have altered the planned 24-foot overpass to a 40-foot wide bridge. Brunton said that the closing of College Street to create a mall could be jepardized if students reject the Highway Department's compromise. He said he made his recommendations to City Council because "I believe that the com promise will be accepted by the students." Highway officials say that the pedestrian bridge widening will be suitable to handle the student traffic and increase both its at tractiveness and safety. Spinazzolo said Student Government still wants a guarantee that the widening of Pickens Street will not eventually lead to the widening of Green and its increased use. ind activities J(GUST6 Concert Lab Band rehearsal, USC Band Hall. 7 p.m. >re Chapel, 10 WEDNESDAY, AUGUST!) "They have started tearing down apartments along Pickens even before the official word to widen has been given." Smith objects to the plan because of the problems students will have crossing the street at the corners of Pickens and Green and Pickens and Pendleton. "With the increased traffic everyone will have to go to the overpass to get across the street." Green from Pickens Street. No traffic would be allowed to turn off Pickens Street toward the Russell House. The plan met one of the students' major objections to the widening of Pickens Street by insuring that traffic on Green Street would not be increased by the widening. Brunton, who has maintained the widening of Pickens Street was a good idea and "made sense" all along, considered the Highway Department change a big step. Jay Smith, head of the Pickens Street Committee, agreed that the students had gained one major objection but maintained that the plan was still unac ceptable to his committee. Tied to the Pickens Street proposal is an agreement by the University to make available free of charge the necessary right-of-way on the North side of Green Street between Pickens and Gregg Streets. The city is being asked to deed to the University all city rights in a seven block area covering College between Pickens and Barn well, Henderson between Pendleton and Green, Barnwell between Pendleton and Green and Gibbs Court between Barnwell and Gregg.
