Therein also is good business and money but it cannot be realized overnight or planned as simply as throwing up a suburban development over what seems to be an untidy swamp or dumping a Hardy's Hamburger joint on top of a very old, very large, very well-built and very beautiful home. Sen. Dennis and his friends can't guarantee the safety of their part of the tidelands beyond a single generation, if that long. And then there are developments like the Watergate com plexes where even freshwater islands are not left in peace by the rabid real estate men. What South Carolina should do is to diversify and experiment with her agriculture and make that the main industry; besides, her natural air inversions forbid any other course except to the foolish. (Did you know that Lipton is very much interested in this state for tea production and is working on the first prototype of a tea picker to solve the cost of labor -- the only major stum bling block to a wealthy South Carolina tea industry?) But, then, it is not to a Carolinia politician's interest to inform or be informed and so he rides upon the backs of his ignorant con stituants, telling them which way to go, where the pits are while all the time keeping his hands over their eyes so they can't see for themselves or know of anything but the status quo which is the man on his back. Such a man, when he finally learns the truth by accident or from those who refuse to be fooled or silenced, may come to lose all hope; but that is most dangerous for the man on his back. A man without hope is a man without fear. He may begin to grow desperate when he sees the growing destruction and waste of his precious heritage and the lies of politicians who claim to safeguard it or who, in their own ignorance, belittle it saying, "It'll grow back!" or "There's still time," or "Don't listen to those fuzzy-headed environmentalists... here, here's money!" Such a man may begin +o contemplate political assassinations or mass euthenasia for such globs of entropy as the moribund General Assembly or armed revolution saying, "But it is my heritage too and I will die without it. I WILL NOT SEE IT DESTROYED!!!'' Let us have iron clad laws as tight as the Bill of Rights concerning ecology and more respect for our intelligence as human beings and less as businessmen...
