According to Thomas F. Jones, president, over half the student body was enrolled in the first two years of the academic program, but the shift in enrollment to the final two years of undergraduate study and to the graduate level has necessitated the reduction of disciplinary walls and the encouragement of cooperation among departments. In this light the University has undergone complete academic reorganization. The reorganization involves a breakdown and redistribution of duties of the main campus vice provosts into specific areas of responsibility. The new categories include Advanced Studies and Research, Health Sciences, Liberal and Cultural Disciplines and Professional Schools. In addition, the College of Arts and Sciences has been divided into three colleges; Arts and Letters, Science and Mathematics, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Jones emphasized the interdisciplinary aspects of the new organization. "In the past the social and behavioral sciences were almost as far apart as art and engineering," he said. "Now they have one dean and five departments which promotes easy interaction." Besides enabling deans to concentrate more effectively on their programs. it is hoped that the-change will promote better student ad visement, better faculty development and greater coordination of programs. Filling the vice provost positions will be Bruce Nelson, Advanced Studies and Research; W. N. Adams Smith, Health Sciences; John Guilds. Liberal and Cultural Disciplines; William Patterson, acting head f Professional Schools.
