needed" Streets Something still needs to be done, but depressing the street and adding two lanes is not the answer. At present approximately 9,000 cars daily pass along the two block area. If the intersection at Pendleton and Pickens is straightened and lanes added, more cars will be tempted to take the route. Once the widened two-block area ends at Green Street the cars will be forced to either jockey into a center lane for the two-lane, downhill trip to Blossom or the cars will turn onto Green. The student committee appointed to study the problem have come up with a list of six proposals which will be handed to the Highway Department for study. The most feasible program is to "'close Green Street and widen Pickens to three lanes, with use of lane directional control, as well as the proposed pedestrian crosswalk." This plan is practical and will solve the pedestrian traffic conflicts, allow traffic to move smoothly and it would close Green. BELL CAMP IS OPEN I R.G. BAGGIES - - Brittons Offers A Large Selection Of Baggies With 2%" Cuff In Solids & Stripes. N BRIT TONS At this point it appears that everything is up to Brunton and the Highway Department. Brunton wants Green closed and has appeared before City Council on at least three occasions requesting such action. But Brunton also thinks that the widening of Pickens is a good Idea. "The plan makes sense to me," Brunton said. "You can't forget that there have been five years of study by the University, the City and the Highway Department. You can't disregard this. "There are more highway projects that need funding and we were pleased when money was budgeted for this project. It would be a travesty if the plans were set aside," Brunton said. Student Body President David Spinazzolo has vowed * 4eep up the fight to get one of the student plans accepted. "This ning was handled the way a lot of things are handled, without con sideration of the alternatives. A four lane highway has the potential to divide this campus in half. "I don't understand why they think the four lane plan is the only way," Spinazzolo said. The Highway Department holds most of the cards and they can simply wait out the storm and build according to their plans when Pickens is no longer an issue. But it would be a simple matter for students to completely close down both Pickens and Green -- legally -- by simply keeping pedestrians In the crosswalks the entire day. What action will be taken is still up in the air and probably will be after the next hearing between Brunton, the Highway Department and the student Committee, but the committee has come up with some sound recommendations. I hope they are not ignored. Help Wanted * ..
