Nov. By BARBARA MURRY Dr. Isao Hirata, the new student health director, is trying to combat various problems in an effort to improve the Student Health Service before a scheduled November opening. Saying that "it's been a poor health service for students." Dr Hirata said that money was a major problem in revamping the health service. He would like to bV Iwjt a iB Dr. Hirata hire five full-time physicians, including one psychiatrically oriented physician and one gynecologist, but that it is difficult to compete with the high salaries specialists command. "In the last six months the salary raise has been sufficient to attract physicians," he said, "but it is still not enough." At present, there is one full-time doctor, who is leaving next week, and one parttime doctor who will be leaving in two months. He said also that doctors from F^ort Jackson mnnnlicfhtArl hut >yui IIIUL I CiallUIlS with local physicians were not well established. Dr. Hirata said he hoped to be able to establish a setup somewhat similar to Yale's, thus allowing students to visit local doctors free of charge, with the university paying the doctor a small salary. As far as psychiatric service, Dr. Hirata hopes that a team approach with the Counseling Services be developed. "The Counseling w use ROUNDHOUSE Math | TntAr I I U IUI Highly Qualified Reasonable Rates CALL 782-0972 I - I jy openii i ? fill distri between s/ and the int Service is excellent," he said, adding that a psychiatrist is needed to cope with student problems. "He must be a doctor interested in kids and their problems." A major plan is a Health Education Program which Dr. Hirata says is necessary for the student's well-being. He cited venereal disease as an example. "VD is a big problem on all campuses and there's no reason for it. It requires knowledge on the student's part." Dr. Hirata said that he could not establish policy on contraception, saying that it is silly for a health center to say that it will or will not rV;-' ^ ~.'-?
