George McGovern won the nock presidential election held Friday at USC. McGovern received 170 of the 377 straw votes cast. President Richard Nixon came in second with 115 votes; Gov. George Wallace received 48 votes; and Sens. Hubert Humphrey and Edmund Muskie drew 10 and nine votes respectively. Of the write-in ballots cast, Shirley Chisolm received six, Ted Kennedy received four, and Preston Brooks drew three. John Ashbrooke and Eugene McCarthy were among several other write-in candidates who drew only -one or two votes. I 14 W1 12 FR.O. Smith attributed the low number to bad publicity and to the non- t cooperation of Richland County Registrar Johnson Peeples. "The registrar was totally against us," she said. "We weren't able to get approval to hold registration at the Chicago concert until the day before, and then we had to pull a.few strings to pull it off."
