Caught between projects to widen Pickens St. and construct the Williams-Brice Nursing Facility, the center will be demolished by September. Neither project will be built on the land occupied by the center, according to the Rev. Mr. C. J. Hammet, Presbyterian chaplain, but building codes prohibit the closeness between buildings that construction would involve. Walk ways and an extrance to the nursing school will replace the center. "We do have a good location -- and a building that is nonin stitutionalized looking, which students like." Hammet said. "I think we will be able to operate whatever comes. There's plenty to do and we just might find different avenues to do it. We might get shaken around in such a position that we may wind up carrying on a more vital ministry than we had before." Hammet said the major problem for the Presbyterian Student Center is where to relocate. Though the University is "cooperating," the initiative is up to the Presbyterians to find a new site for the student center. No site has been found. 'The thing that we realize is that in order to do what we feel we ought to be doing, we have got to be as close to the mainstream of student traffic as possible. Hammet said this is the most serious consideration in selecting a site. There are sites available, but Inquiry By DAVID SIMPSON Staff Writer Q) The University Administration intends to house new computers in the Naval Armory. This will entail virtual destruction of the gym, which is the only gym on campus open for free play EVERYDAY (except Thursday at 3:30). Of course the Administration has not announced this to the student body in general. Construction (?) is to begin the first of May (after exams probably, when no students are here to protest). I believe that dissemination of this fact alone will force the Ad ministration to search for an alternative site, especially in light of the poor intramural department. I suggest you speak with Thomas Faris in the Administration Building and Captain Fitzergerald at the Naval Armory. I also understand that Frank McGuire is dissatisfied with these plans. James Tribble A) According to Thomas Faris of Campus Planning the matter has not yet been completely resolved. It was planned to split the academic and payroll computer into separate computers. The new computer has not arrived yet and the administration has been considering the Naval Ar mory as its new home. The purchasing warehouse, however, has been considered as a temporary or permanent site. Plans have now been considered to make a new home for both computers. If the Armory is used both the bottom floor and gym area would be utilized for the computers and an upper floor would be constructed to be used by the ROTC as classrooms. The loss of the gym could 'possibly be replaced by an addition to the Physical Education building. The matter is, however, still up in the air and no delinite decision has been made. Q) Can someone cover a story concerning the poor (no) ventilation in the Undergraduate Library? Ever since the library was built (1959-60) the damn place has been cold in winter or hot (stuffy) in spring--summer. I come to USC to study in quiet, comfortable, surroundings only to find the major building on campus is neglected. (You may find some staff members dead from exhaustion). Due to the architectural design of this building, there is a heat-modifier involved which raises the temperature 15-20 degrees more than other buildings. Roy C. Smith A) Ed Shelley of the Maintenance Department said the water chiller in the air conditioning unit could not be turned on. lie said his department exhausted all known means to get it running but still failed. lie has called Carrier Air Conditioning but a representative has failed to show. A local man who has not worked on such a machine in ten years may be called in, so there may be a chance that the unit will be working during the week of exams. Meanwhile, it continues to blow just a lot of hot air. Q) I've been hearing a lot on campus lately about the Preston Brooks Society. Could you find out exactly what this group is? Jane Tschumperlin A) Mike Boliver, member of the Preston Brooks Society said it is (Continued on page 7) Rental refrigerators Students with rental refrigera- South Building Desk tors should turn them in from 9:30 South Tower Desk a.m. to 12 noon and 1:30 to 4 p.m., Wade Hampton Desk starting Tuesday, May 2 and end- B H D ing Monday May 9. "We could buy property in the six-block projected area (for East campus expansion)" he said, "But if we bought it, we'd be faced with the same problem we've been faced with in the past -- moving." We were aware when we leased this building from the Carolina Research and Development Corporation that we'd have to move, but we didn't expect that we'd have to move for another three years. The center owns a site on Catawba and Pickens, Hammet said, which was purchased when the University was projected to expand southward.
