All-America
freestyler
Carolina swimming coach Alan
Gentry has announced the signing
of a second prep star, two-time
high school All-America Tom
Schmidt of San Marino, Calif.
Gentry called Schmidt, "one of
the finest prospects ever to sign
with Carolina."
Schmidt, primarily a long
distance freestyler, finished eighth
in the 1500 meters at the AAU's
National Championship4 last
summer. He has been ranked by
Swimming World Magazine as the
world's eleventh best in that event,
seventh nationally. He's also
ranked ninth in the nation in the 880
meter freestyle, and thirteenth in
the world.
Also announced was the signing,
by tennis coach Ron Smarr of Jeff
Kefalos of Pakersburg, W. Va.
Kefalos led his high school to three
straight state titles, while going
undefeated as a sophomore and
junior.
Broom set
to throw
in Relays
Forrest Broom will be the sole
Carolina representative in the 1972
Penn Relays in Philadelphia. A
senior weightman, Broom will
throw the discus today, the third
day of the four-day carnival.
Last year USC won the Relays'
sprint medley relay by defeating
Villanova to end the Wildcat's
string of 17 consecutive major
relay titles.
Broom has been a consistent
winner for the Gamecocks in the
discus this year, with a top toss of
173 feet, and has teamed with Rich
Sorin to give Bill McClure's team a
formidable 1-2 punch in the shot
put.

Beam retired from the contest
after walking three batters and
hitting another in the sixth inning
to yield the final Furman run. In
relief of Beam came another USC
starter, Larry Erbaugh, who
completed the game by throwing 3
2-3 innings of perfect ball. The
Gamecocks batsmen meanwhile

USC jumped ahead when Eddie
