East Carolina got wins from Walter Davenport in both the long jump, 22-10, and the triple jump, 49-0:1. The Gamecocks won both of the relays in the meet, the 440 and mile relays. Guy Hornsby, Jim Small, Keith Eidson and Reid teamed to capture the 440 relay in 42.9. Later, Dan Loshack, Small, Paul McLeod and Bob Dempsey handled the exchanges when they won the mile relay with a time of 3:18.4. In the individual running events, USC placed first and second in three events and swept two others. Dempsey, 48.9, led the USC sweep in 'the quarter-mile, and McLeod, 49.2, and Loshack, 49.8, grabbed the second and third spots. Three starters on the of fensive have suffered leg injuries, though none have required an operation. Rising junior guard Rick An thony broke a small bone in his leg, while Andy Leventis and Jimmy Privette suffered strained ligaments. Leventis is now wearing a cast. "The injuries to the offensive line may have something to do with the fact that our first unit defense has not been scored upon yet," said Shalosky. With the loss of all three starters in the secondary, a pair of rising sophomores and Files have been pressed into duty. "The young backs in the defensive backfield have really looked good," Shalosky commented. "C. A. Wilson has not been a total surprise because we always knew he was good. But he's sort of small. Yet he could end up being one of the best outside cornermen we've had. He's little, but he's tough. He and Tom Zip perly will probably join Files in the starting secondary." Zipperly led last year's fresh men in rushing and scoring, gaining 387 yards on the ground while tallying seven touchdowns and a two point conversion. A number of rising sophomores from last season's 3-2 frosh team have stood out in spring workouts. "Jay Hodgin has been very im pressive," Shalosky said. "He may not be fancy, but he's a rugged, hard-nosed player. And Bill Cregar is like Tommy Simmons with a step more speed. "Jerry Witherspoon and Buck Thompson are also real good young prospects, Witherspoon at guard and Thompson at defensive tackle. We switched Tony Pepper, who was a quarterback in high school, to defensive end. So now, he can play either roverback or end. We have eight or 10 sophomores who will probably see enough playing time to letter, and that's a pretty good number." A n Art Carved Wedding Band Says Love All Year Long..
