USC's baseball squad employed mass sub
s itution while easily defeating the inept
Georgia State Panthers twice, on Wednesday 9
0 and on Thursday 12-0.
The Panthers, with a record of 0-19 on the
year, committed numerous errors, including an
unbelievable high of nine in the second contest.
Taking advantage of the huge Gamecock
leads, Coach Bobby Richardson cleared his
en ire bench and used all non-pitchers in the
wo routs.
Freshman first baseman Hank Small did not
hii safely in Wednesday's affair and so his
hiiiing streak was concluded at 19 games, I
which is believed to be the school record. Small r
competed in Wednesday's game despite suf- C
fering from a slight case of food poisoning.
Carolina starting pitcher Larry Erbaugh and
Georgia State starter Dwight Hamner were
locked up in a pitchers duel throughout the first
four innings of Wednesday's contest. Both
pi! chers were working on one-h it shutouts in the
fourih inning.
In the fifth inning however, USC broke the
game open by gaining seven runs on five r
singles, two doubles, a walk, a stolen base, and C
wo errors by the Panthers. jl
Ken Shull, gaining a starting berth over c
regular second baseman Tommy Moody, drove
in ihe only run Erbaugh needed in the contest s
when his double scored Billy Petoskey from F
second base. Before the runs stopped coming in
- he fift h, the Gamecocks had batted around and
were leading 7-0. 1
Drew Choate added two more runs in the c
sixih by slamming a 360-foot homerun to left
field with Shull aboard.
Erbaugh, meanwhile, was limiting State to

On Thursday, the Panthers wasted no time in

Peioskey started off the Carolina effort by
oubling to left and then moving around to
core on two wild pitches. With one out, Small
oubled and also scored on a wild pitch
nleashed by Panther pitcher Marty Rhodes.
Rhodes left the game after Pete Carpenter

rs .
Joe Cole then came onto the mound for
keorgia State and the Panther coach Ron
ennet displayed no mercy in forcing Cole to
imain on the mound throughout the rest of the
ame. Cole's pitching statistics suffered as he
'as smacked for nine runs coming on 11 USC
i:s and seven errors.
Bruce Pudlock and reserve, first baseman
ob Kleinknecht were two who feasted upon
ole's poor pitching, as both smacked
3meruns in the game. Reserve catcher Billy
eckle went 2-4 in his first at-bats of the year,
icking up a double and two RBL.
As was the case on Wednesday, Greg Ward
!quired only a single run to pick up his pit
iIng victory. Ward surrendered only three hits
:he 12-0 rout, to even his mark at 2-2 with the
)mplete game win.
John Gambrell tied the school record for
olen bases. His 16th theft of the year equals
e!oskey's high mark of 1970.
