Moral apathy besieging USC DEAt MS. MIIER: This is in response to the editorial printed in Wednesday's GAMECOCK. You , as a journalist and organizer of a college publication, must be aware of the moral apathy that is besieging the USC students --- perhaps most U. S. students. It does seem true that all the demonstrations of the 60s have done little to actually end the war, fight poverty, and save the Earth, but even so, this work has made many people aware of problems they either didn't know existed and-or didn't care about. This situation is not enough for people who demand concrete solutions; their fevor extends only' as far as their egos can expand, and when this expansion is shut off by vague results, as is often the case, they lose interest. Thus, the number of people who are still marching has dwindled. But the real workers are there. I respect them for their beliefs and courage. America was once populated by such courageous, moral people who felt that their I commitments and beliefs were their most important reasons for I living. The settlers of Virginia and I the explorers of the far west are I examples of these type people. p These people risked everything, everything for the freedom that we i have squandered and filthied. I Complacency is the new American I motto. And I'm especially sad- t dened by the fact that so much of i this complacency is in the South, t once the most demanding area of the nation when it came to civil I liberties, and freedom of debate. J Thomas Jef ferson. Henry Calhoun, and .\ndrew Jackson----- these men I were Southern men who took pride % in their responsibilities to the nation and to themselves. Where are the descendants of these men? I Why have they let the once beautiful land of America that ; meant so much to Jefferson become so filthy that honest men weep in despair and frustrations? Where are the children of the pilgrims, whose demands for freedom forced their flight to America'? I not say "they" again. It is ( "us- all of us who are respon GAME( The' GAMECOCK is published tri semesters with the exception of Univi Chanties of address forms. subscripti should be sent to Drawer A. All of us have let the first American government makers let the poor people down, the Vietnamese people down and 5 even more tragically, let ourselves down. We had such high hopes for what we could do. Surely some of us still care enough to keep working for what we believe in. I)esperation. ISETH1 WILSON Viet Vets should immolate themselves )EAR MS. MILLER: The April 14 edition of the samecock carried a story con erning the activities of an august ody at USC calling itself "Viet (ets Against The War." Although alf of the thirteen members who hiowed have no military ex erience of any kind and thereby io better qualified to pass udgment on the horror of war than iey would be to discuss menstrual ramps, perhaps there is an an wer to their serious credibility ap. Having had the dubious listinction of taking a minor role in he conflict in controversy, I )elieve that perhaps Napalm lualifies (hands-down) as an impressive and technologically Advanced symbol of warfare. Now nasmuch as many students have iot had the opportunity of seeing his substance in action, perhaps he Vets Against The War should give consideration to self mmolation via the Napalm route. This function might well be merged with Earth Day Coalition n the form of an ecological project (dense smoke is produced) thereby capitalizing upon another problem air pollution- so that the whole exercise could be fairly valuable. Perhaps such a demonstration ould be scheduled for Fire 'revention Week and further focus upon the distinct disadvantages irising from smoking in bed. In the spirit of fostering worthy :auses. I hereby place a standing >ffer to provide the funds for ten gallons of gasoline (high-test or egular) plus a new Zippo lighter non-returnable) for any members )f the above group desiring to avail hemselves of this opportunity to ender a genuine service to a great rmany people. I frankly think this 'ould be much more convincing han streaking themselves with lood which they' never shed in rotesting a war in which they ever fought. W~EY.MAN II. MILLER: After reading your editorial I was left with several distinct impressions. Perhaps the most immediate is that you are a complete idiot. Your editorial seemed to vacillate from rabid yellow journalism to hopeless inanity. The actions we took Thursday were not designed to include large numbers of people. They were -developed specifically to affect the persons most directly involved with the military system on our campus and to include a small group in a dramatic theater action. You are perhaps right that a few of the persons in front of the Russell House said 'What in the hell is the matter with them" as they saw us making our statement against the carnage that America is producing in Southeast Asia. I am certain that the majority of responsible students at USC would. have no such thoughts in their heads. They know "what's wrong" and are themselves opposed to the war. They can well understand and empathize with such a demonstration. I am sure that many students will take vart in the "LIFE RALLY' on this Saturday. April 22. and will participate in pickets at future ROTC drills. The Gamecock has consistently refused to publish information on any progressive movements around South Carolina. I think it is time that this clear bias be avoided. The question of military presence on a college campus with academic credit is a vital one for our society and some of our best minds have struggled with the problem. Instead of mindless dismissal of the issue. why not allow an honest debate on this vital subject'? I personally have offered to write any articles or guest columns and have consistently been refused the opportunity by the Gamecock. Further I still feel that there should be a public forum between military administration pro and anti-student people to discuss HOTC. The men who are now marching around our intramural fields will next year be manning ships and flying the planes which are murdering people and enforcing he "Pax America" in every corner of' the earth. Our society has geared itself to having the ilit ary as a perv'asive past of o)ciety with huge amounts of the budget supporting these death in dealing forces. As responsible 'itiz.ens we must question if we really want the research in our Iniversities. the power of our in lustry., and the wealth of our ation directed toward producing nachines of dest ruction. Give us a chance to make a plea for peace through the media we pay for. If you are opposed don't grasp for straws and say you too are against the war. If you don't endorse the killing of Vietnamese and feel we should get out now say so. If you wish to attack us do so around the issues. PETER BROWN Feeling disgust as an American DEAR MS. MILLER: 100 B-52D aircraft dropped their bombs on the people of the Hanoi Haiphong area. There are 598,110 people (1972 Almanac) in that area. Those B-52D's carry a total of 5.400.000 pounds of bombs (Dept. Df Defense stats. one B-52D carries 108-500 lb. bombs). Those 600,000 people are not military targets, they are not soldiers they are not tanks: they are people, live human beings, farmers, factory workers, mothers, husbands, sons, daughters, fathers, babies, and little kids. I write those words as a preface to my disgust with Ms. Miller's editorial "'An Early Circus", I write those words with my disgust at being an American. We are murdering a countless number of people, live human beings. everyday in Indochina. People who want peace, peace to live out their lives, peace to stop the bloodshed of 30 years of war. We protested the other day, a protest to bring the horror of war to an isolated American public, a demonstration to show the ,rossness of war. We did that and will do more in good conscience. But all Ms. Miller can ask is if there was any intent or purpose to )ur demonstration. All she can see is a prank. a prank from men that have killed and now refute killing, men who have not yet killed and refuse to kill, women who stand with their brothers and say they are right in refuting killing. I will scream out against killing till I myself am killed. I will not stand for death. I want peace despite the Millers of this or any other world. Help stop the killing, join us.
