The Gamecocks pulled within a

Jumpshot with 8:21 remaining in a

Aydlett scored from in close with

Dennis Wuycik dropped in two
more free throws at 5:08 and Bill
Chamberlain connected from
outside 30 seconds later. Cham
berlain then hit four straight
points, stretching UNC's ad

Hubband scored the Tar Heel's

Steve Previs hit a free throw,
and Wuycik dropped in three more,
as the Tar Heels rode to a 51-32
lead at intermission.
The second half saw North
Carolina open up the middle of the
USC defense for a number of easy
layups. The closest the ai
Gamecocks could come during the be

get the ball we couldn't get un

"They just got a better start than
we did and have a good bench. We
tried to stay in the zone, but we.
couldn't because of their quickness
and then they got so far ahead. It
just wasn't one of our nights."
North Carolina coach Dean
Smith was obviously pleased with
the win. "You have to be pleased
with a tremendous victory over the
team that beat us last year in the
tournament.
"We know that Winters and
Joyce were tremendous outside
shooters, so they looked for the
outside and we didn't want to give
it to them. Maybe that's better
than Riker getting the ball in
side, but Chamberlain did a great
job on him."
"I think we played better than
we did in the tournament, and I
feel like we're finally out of the
ACC now. It was strange out there
to see two teams with ACC
Champions on their warmup
uniforms.
"We were very active or rather
aggressive on the boards. Our
board play was significant," Smith
continued, "Since South Carolina
is such a good board team. When
we got the rebound the fast break
was always there, McAdoo was
there and he let Karl and Previs
show how great they really are.
Wuycik, McAdoo and Chamberlain
all played excellant on the boards
tonight."
"But I must admit South
Carolina did not play one of their
better games. They are a much
better team than they showed
tonight and never quit."

AP names
Riker to

Carolina's Tom Riker recently
won recognition on three more
established college All-America
teams.
Riker was named to the first
team Associated Press All
America basketball team, while
receiving second team honors on
both the United Press In
ternational and SPORTING NEWS
squads.
Earlier in the season Riker
received a first team berth on the
National Association of Basketball
Coaches' team.
Riker became the first player in
Carolina history to be named to the
AP first team. In fact, only two
USC basketballers have ever been
named to the second squad of the
AP team--those being John Roche,
last year finishing as the top vote
getter on the second team, and
Grady Wallace in 1957.
Joining Riker on the first team
AP squad, picked by sportswriters,
were UCLA's Bill Walton, who was
named to all three first team All
America squads; Junior Dwight
Lamar of Southwestern Louisiana;
Ed Ratleff of Long Beach State,
dlso a junior; and Marquette's
2enter Jim Chones, a junior who
railed to finish out the season after
igning with the professional New
York Nets basketball franchise.
Riker was the only senior to be
iamed to the AP first teams.
The UPI squad, the coaches
>icks, had the same first team,
vith the exception of Riker, who
ell to the second squad, being
-eplaced by UCLA's senior guard
-lenry Bibby.
The SPORTING NEWS team,
hosen by professional general
nanagers and scouts, was slightly
lifferent, with only Walton and
tatleff repearting from the other
>ress service's first squads. Bud
;tallworth, Kansas; Brain Taylor,
"rinceton; and Robert McAdoo of
lorth Carolina rounded out the
irst team. Riker was one of seven
