MILLER: he At times I feel as though I should ur laugh when I see one of those nifty to looking "Register and Vote er Democratic" posters that are ve plastered about our campus, but on the rage - ' frustration that I feel ut overcome , e urge to laugh. I wonder how many more blind JM voters will stumble to the polls in support of these parasites that ,g have victimized South Carolina for L nearly 100 years. One could write volumes on the quagmires that the national Democratic party's "leaders" have dragged us into--quicksand iat traps that their leaders all of a of sudden claim to have solutions to. of But this letter is intended to shed the light onto local matters that are too the often overshadowed by the LBJs ion and Huberts that the local party to pays allegiance to. to Though South Carolina Democrats have had solid, un challenged domination of the state IAN on every political level since 1876, 'EE they always seems to go to the polls saying "Just give us another chance and maybe we'll do it right." But each year we fall farther behind in education, in spending for police, and in other public services. Nearly every taxes go up, along with salaries for the state's fat cats. How long can this go on? The state is already millions of dollars in debt (debt by the way that is prohibited by the state's consitituion). Governors of this state are the only ones with their own private jet planes. A $14 million underground atom bomb proof parking lot for state em ployees only is under construction near the capitol. We've had more than our share of kick-back takers, special privilege grabbers and "public service commission" robberies. Perhaps the hardest pill of all to swallow is the continued loyalty of nearly all of the state's blacks to the Democratic machine. MILLER: So, TOPICS and the S.C. High way Department have taken it upon themselves to improve the t traffic situation at USC. Im provements are definitely needed. I think it's a great idea to cut the campus in half, direct the thousand female students of Capstone and Columbia Halls across one over pass at College Street (not to mention the thousands of students who have classes in Humanities and several hundred professors and instructors who must also cross the campus on foot), further pollute the campus with noise and hubbub, and by means of a wider road through a campus which everyone loves to drive, redirect a considerable percentage more traffic onto our tranquil campus to a fantastic bottleneck, which will be unavoidable at the corner of Green Street and Intra-City Pickens Street. I also enjoy the idea of soot and oil stains on LeConte and Sloan Colleges, whose grey walls have faded and need to be greyer. Of course, there is one drawback, that the walls of Humanties will become tainted also, but this situation can be overcome with monthly sandblasting. With this improvement, the added safeties on Blossom Street, the overpass walkway, and safe atmosphere created by thousands of students crossing Assembly Street, which is little traveled thereby negating any need for a student overpass or underpass, the Highway Depart ommmmmm--m- --- ASSON -eidn ent has added to the welfare and ity of our beautiful camppus. deed, congratulations are in der to TOPICS and the South irolina Highway Department. Mr. Paul Dietzel eclared that mustaches can be orn by the athletes, due to the ressure of the blacks explaining iat it was and still is a part of ieir heritage. At first glance this iould seem to be a breakthrough i the stringent rules of "How the outh Carolina athlete should [ok." But a second look reveals a nost sick stiuation. How ridiculous it is that the thlete should strive to maintain he old time image of the clean cut mnd clean shaven figure, when werybody knows that he is not. Nhy put on a phoney face to please he athletic department and the ilumni when that face is not you? Why must people try to enforce ow you look when your ap pearance does not interfere with the performance of your talents? Well this hideous policy is still being carried out. Mr. Dietzel explained that the mustache must not be thick and must not grow around the mouth. I just can't help from sadly laughing at this farce. It seems that the people in question put a higher value on how you look than how you play. This is not the first time I have experienced such disgust with an athletic department. A MUSTACHE is a MUSTACHE! It's really degrading that people (athletic department and af filiates) feel they have to regulate the thickness and length of the hair of the upper lip.
