The frustration of no tickets DEAR MS. MILLER: An Open Letter to Uncle Tom: I love this university - yes, even during football season. I proudly sing the Alma Mater; win4ose draw, because I think of USC as a university whose diploma I shall be proud to possess. I am proud of the "fighting Gamecocks" wherever they go, because they are representing the university of which I am so proud. I even like to watch them play, to be in the stadium to feel the ex citement with my fellow students. I like to be in the Coliseum to know the excited frenzy of victory. I love to toast my school with fellow students during the playing of the "Alma Mater." Again, win-lose &aw, the feeling of unity among the students during that song is such that it is actually an emotional, stirring experience in itself. Ah, but that's where the rut comes in, isn't it? "There aren't any more tickets," she said. First reaction is disappointment. Next reaction is ANGER. I paid for the tickets in the activity fee, but since my social security number ends in "0," I couldn't pick up tickets until 2:00. (Most people cut, but some of us are stupid enough to play by the rules). The lady would not so much as let me step foot in the Coliseum to explain the situation - her face spoke to me through glass, as if I were an animal best kept at a distance. I was mad. They sent a young man out to explain the situation (still, I could not enter the palace that Frank built). He explained to me that I should have come earlier; I ex plained (angrily, I admit) to him that had I come earlier in the day, before my exam, that I would not have been granted admittance anyway because my student number ended in "0." He ex plained to me that I should have had a friend pick up tickets earlier; I explained to him that I was picking up tickets for a friend. I had two fee receipts - by right, two tickets were mine. They were paid for - they were mine. Doesn't that make sense? Isn't that right? Or did I goof up somewhere - maybe I should have cut the exam. Maybe I should have borrowed an earlier ID and cut another class. Ah, but some of us are trusting, some of us play by the rules - and some of us don't get basketball tickets. Disappointment - frustration - ANGER! Saturday night, all the alumnae who contributed well- to the stadium's enlargement to the building of the Coliseum, BA building and Law complex - the alumnae will stream throdgh the doors of Carolina Coliseum while I watch the game on television. I'm not saying that they shouln't be there. I just mean to say that I should be, too. I haven't had any money to give to USC because I haven't even graduated yet. I'm borrowing money and working just for the privilege of being in this university. But I paid for my tickets at registration; some alumnae probably just bought tickets last week. I KNOW students are only given half the tickets, I KNOW the Coliseum can't hold everyone. But I paid first, don't you see? I should be at that game, too - Don't you understand? I want to see my school play. I want to feel the we- admi. Bu no fors sbntme sin Inch cuff on trous4 Bri exhilaration, the pride! I should be able to be there - why can't you understand? . Frustrated, I angrily ran to the Gamecock office, screaming obscenities and demanding revenge. I walked back to the dorm, walked into the elevator. There, pasted on the wall were the words, "tickets for sale." The same day of pick up, someone wanted to sell tickets for people who wanted to go to the game and see the Gamecocks. Yes they paid for the tickets - but some student whose number for the "0" will pay for his tickets twice. It's not fair - it's not fair! I don't know anybody "im portant" to get good seats - any seat that is rightly mine is okay. But I'm getting the idea that playing by the rules at USC doesn't count. Either you're devious, or out of luck. Right now, I'm out of luck. But someone, Saturday night is sitting in my seat. There's nothing anyone can do - that's what the young man said. MILLER: I am writing to announce that I am not running for president of the student body. Calvin said I ought to run but I said no, I probably wouldn't get too many votes because I got short hair and I'd miss out on the hippie vote. I just don't understand what's happening to the young people of America. Me and the gang was at the Tammy Wynette concert and there wasn't hardly nobody but old people where we were sitting. Marty couldn't make it because his momma was sick and he had to stay home and wash dishes after supper. We told him he was crazy to miss out on all that good music and he ought to make his sister do the dishes. He said he would but he already owes her six dollars and a half and she said she would call it even if he would let her go out with this guy from Cayce. I wrote you a letter about my ink pen I lost a while back. Well, you don't have to put my ad in because there was this '63 Fairlane parked at Doug Broome's and there was an ink pen laying on the seat. I didn't figure he'd miss it so I took it. I saw that gay lib ad in the back of your paper. I tell you, if any queers meet up with us, they'll get their ass cut. I ain't kidding.
