Swimmey fourth in By BILL GRANT Sports Writer The Carolina swimmers, powered behined a performance that saw five USC records fall, finished fourth in the Southern Independents Swimming Champ ionships held this weekend in Miami. "We were pleased with the performance," said coach Alan Gentry. "Everybody swam well. Of the 16 swimmers we took with us 13 turned in career best times and the others were very close." Carolina finished behind host Miami, Tulane and Florida State, while USC's 69 points were enough to head South Florida, Georgia Tech and Fort Lauderdale College. Backstroker Casey Claflin was the only swimmer to come home with a first place finish, winning the 100-yard contest in 54:4. 54:4. The victory brings the netters' record to an unblemished 2-0 while State's record dropped to 1-1. Carolina's previous win came when they defeated the Citadel 9-0 on March 1. Coach Ron Smarr stated af terwards, "I was pleased with our performance in the doubles, but a couple of the singles could have been better." He felt that N.C. State, "had a scrappy team." In the singles matches Kevin McCarthy of USC defeated Herb McKim 6-3, 6-1. LARGEST SELEC2flOt s place Miami USC mark in the 100-yard butterfly with a clocking of 2:01.1, Gray then teamed with Claflin, Nick Kesslering and Chip Newman to post a fourth place, 7:15.5 finish in the 800 medly event, Newman set a new mark in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:46.5, Claflin's time of 2:00.0 shattered the 200-backstroke mark and the 400 medly team of Claflin, Jeff Nuebert, Jim Villa and Newman established a new record in that event. This was the final meet for many of the Carolina swimmers, as only two have qualified for action in the upcoming NCAA's at West Point. Gary Wetherhold has qualified in the diving events and Claflin will compete in the backstroke con tests. However, Newman and the 400 freestyle team both are on the edge of the qualifing times and need only cut fractions to get in. In the doubles matches Carolina swept all three as Craig and Desatnik defeated Strang and Merrit, Marks and McCarthy combined to down McKim and King while Kamm and Collins teamed to pass Long and Johnson, thus completing the sweep. The tennis team will host East Tennessee State on Monday at 2:15 and at 1:30 on Tuesday. Sports Editor George Beam struck out 17 batters, a new Carolina record, in leading the USC baseball team to a 3-0 victory over North Carolina State Saturday, enabling the Gamecocks to split a two-game series with the Wolfpack. USC lost the first game of the series the season opener on - Friday, by a 5-4 margin. Beam surrendered no runs and only three hits to the Wolfpack while going the full nine-inning effort for his win. His 17 strikeouts included seven straight. As it turned out, the only run the Gamecocks needed for the win came in the bottom half of the second, when John Gambrell's bloop single to center drove Bob Kleinknecht across the plate from second base. Strong insurance runs were provided by catcher Drew Choate's two-out, two-run homerun down the left-field line in the third inning. . Pete Carpenter scored ahead of Choate,after he had singled his way on base, making the score 3-0. State took a 5-4 victory in the season opener when Bill Glad knocked a one-run homerun in the top of the ninth which shattered a 4-4 deadlock and handed USC starting pitcher Larry Erbaugh the loss for his route-going per formance.
