Benton, who desires a seat in the House of Representatives and who quite obviously desires the support and the vote of his contemporaries. Haven't we made fools of ourselves long enough following after the damn yankees? Aspiring to every little piece of wealth and filth and corruption the smelly North has accumulated? Have you ever smelled Newark? Apparently not too many people in Savannah had until it was too late. Have you ever had a glass of water in Savannah or tried to when you felt you would expire without water? Did you know that we have so religiously followed the yankee that now 75 per cent of all the pesticides used in the nation are used in the South? Did you know that the Southern Black man's body has 60 per cent more DDT in it than any other man in the nation? But I don't suppose any statistic on him really matters, does it? Did you know that -the Southern white man carries 30 per cent more DDT than any other man in the nation? Did you know that the Savannah River sizzles with poison in such proportions as to give third degree burns? Many children have suffered this par ticular ailment while playing on its river banks. Is this really what we want-to continue to our final destruction pursuing the ghost of the North. The political platform of promising industry and jobs is obsolete. If there are some who think it is not then they obviously value something more than their constituents. I hope for the sake of Charleston and for South Carolina that enough students on this campus and on every campus realize that the trimmings on this particular package are obsolete. We need representatives from this state and this generation who are going to take the inititive and the responsibility to find alternative life styles that deliver food, water and air. G. ANN SCOTT ELLIOTT Discovery of the no-sandwich rule DEAR MS. MILLER: Would someone please enlighten us as to rules concerning food at the Coliseum. We were all set for the big game with Notre Dame and as we were going into the Coliseum, we were stopped by a fellow in a snappy red jacket with black lapels. He inquired as to the contents of our brown paper bag. We assumed he wanted to check out the possibility of an alcholic beverage being smuggled in - we quickly pointed out that all we had was tuna fish sandwiches and chocolate cookies. Imagine our surprise when we learned that with beer - tuna fish was banned! We mentioned that we had seen others consuming home-made goodies before other games, but the red jacket was not moved - "No sandwiches allowed!" Now we ask you, what do you do with a bag full of tuna fish when it's game time and no trash can is in sight? As we sat on the sidewalk feasting, we pondered this discovery of the "No-sandwich" rule. Nowhere in the USC catalogue does it say "No sandwiches"; nor in the neato basketball progam we bought. MILLER: Since some critics of SCPIRG insist that whatever happened in Oregon with OSPIRG or in Min nesota with MPIRG must happen here in South Carolina, we would like to submit the following ex tracts of letters from various persons and agencies in Minnesota describing the MPIRG group. These letters are on file at the SCPIRG office and are available on request to anyone. The reason the letters were written is that MPIRG applied to HEW for funding of an en vironmental educational project. The extracts that follow are in relation to that MPIRG request: "Both MPIRG and MECCA are to be commended for focusing attention on the possibilities of adverse environmental con sequences from inadequate regulation of copper-nickel mining and processing. I believe our state agencies are sensitive to the concerns of MPIRG and your willingness to participate on the Minerals Subcommittee will assist our state personnel in examining the various ramifications of base metal mining. Also, I look forward to the assistance of MPIRG and other citizens groups during the 1973 legislative session in im plementing any additional statutes... I want to commend MPIRG for the presentation made at the December 12, 1971 Executive Council meeting and for the fine work of Ms. Susan Kline and Mr. Jon Herman of the MPIRG staff. " Wendell R. Siirley K. Hunt, of the Enviromental Sciences Foundation, Min neapolis,Minn. Robert L. Herbst, the Minnesota state commissioner of natural resourses said that be backed MPIRG and that groups of this kind "have been very effbctive in the past and citizens and students can work together to find solutions" to enviromental problems. (DAILY MINNESOTAN March 10, 1971). We feel SCPIRG can succeed in South Carolina, just as MPIRG has in Minnesota. - CAROL ELKIN Ticket distribution major problem DEAR MS. MILLER: The distribution of student tickets for athletic events is a major problem here at USC. There has been talk on the subject, but no action. The time has come to quit talking and start acting. It appears that the ad ministration is satisfied with the present mode of distribution. Why shouldn't they be? Why should they seek a solution to the problem when they can sell the tickets twice-that would be poor economics. Normally, when one pays for something in advance, as we do with the atheletic tickets, one expects to receive that item.This is not so with our tickets. We are charged for them, but have no real assurance of receiving them. This practice must be stopped. I feel that I have a more suitable solution to the problem than the one presently used. I propose that the Universtiy, during registration, give each student a book of receipts. You would have a fair chance of getting tickets. If a person didn't want to attend the game, he could present his receipt for that game, and get a full refund for this ticket. The University would then be free to resell the ticket to the general public. A time limit for refunds could be set before each game. Any tickets left could then be sold by the University. If one wanted to attend the game, he could then go to the ticket office, and use his receipt to obtain his ticket. Date tickets could be purchased as they are now. The situation would then be more equally controlled by the students. This solution may not be the best, but it gives the student a choice to do as he wants. One would be guaranteed a ticket, or receive a refund for it. This method, or any other, probably wouldn't be acceptable by the University. Evidently, greed has gone to its head and fairness to the student ignored. Something must be done about the problem, and now is the time to do it. The University isn 't going to take the step to change distribution, its up to the student body to make itself heard and felt. -en WaOrs=
