Does Wilt think McGuire racist? DEAR MS. MILLER A timely word from a "short' man... "Coach McGuire is a racist." Yet, mutual best friendE and ardent admirers are he and Wilt Chamberlain. I wonder if Mr Chamberlain and the other old Philadelphia Warriors consider Frank McGuire a racist. I doubt it. I also doubt that if a black, yellow% or red ballplayer of the caliber ol any of the present starting fiv( Gamecocks were recruited by USC Mr. McGuire wouldn't play him or the basis of his skin color. If the coach is consciously using only whites, maybe in these days congratulations are in order in stead of ridicule. The word "athlete" has, in recent years, become as the word "poor" has, especially to liberal dogooder types, a synonym for the word "black." As for Wilson, Williams and Woods, being short is a 24 hour job. Statistics show that taller job applicants are preferred to short. Many women, particularly in this part of the world, believe that physical height is directly related to sexual proficiency. Certain military programs require hopefuls to be a minimum of 5 feet 6 inches. When someone is looking for a fight, does he pick on the tall guy? All of the above plus the "smaller" everyday discourtesies and that wee people aren't drafted to play basketball or football despite their love of those games...sigh. Not being short is not the same as being black, but there are similarities. You didn't ask to be black and I didn't ask to have my vertical growth terminated so abruptly. What to do? Feel sorry for yourself? Curse those blessed with what it is you want? The answer is not to be found in any organization for the "advancement of,' this, that or the other thing either. You'll find such groups formed..of those also hung up .on their own inadequacies, eitber real or imagined, mostly the latter. Be a better person inwardly. Those who matter will notice. The ol' self-fulfilling prophesy. Before you take your ball home because the guys wouldn't let you be captain, decide whether or not you're really good enough to be. And leave Mr. Manning alone unless he retains you as his at torney. Have any of you asked him how he feels? Naturally he wants to play, but is he so conceited to think he's a better judge of his ability than is the coach? And how embarassing is all this muckraking and nit-picking to him? NAME WITHHELD BY REQUEST Trash paper engulfing campus DEAR MS. MILLER: We wish to comment on the caption which appeared under a photograph of the Eco 70's reclamation bin (The GAMECOCK, Mon.' Feb. 14) The person who titled the picture "Lobby Pollution" may have done so in jest, but, the problem of trash paper engulfing the campus is indeed a serious one. Presently, only two people are responsible for loading, transporting, and unloading approximately 800 pounds of trash paper per week. This is an absurdly small number of people to manage such a large volume of paper. We had hoped to supply 4 dorms with reclamation bins; however, John Elkins, head of Volunteer Services, has informed us that no one has offered to assume any responsibility for the success of the project. Now, plans are at a stalemate until we can get volunteers. We appreciate the fact that students are bringing newspapers and magazines to the bins but, it is sad that, out of a campus of 15.000 students we can find none who are will-ng to devote a few hours a week to such a worthwhile project. Letters Mrr. and Mr. for identity DEAR MS. MILLER: Hurrah for Women in Focus Week. I know the purpose was to emphasize womens' inequalities especially health and sexist policies. However I feel that your cause should have gone further. How about this? Have women invite men out, pick up the tab for the evenings entertainment, pick up tickets for the Carolina ball games, make plans for the weekends, and make sure we get home on time. Itwould also be a good idea to be able to designate bet.ween single and married men. The solution that I would propose would be to designate single men with the title of Mrr. and married men with the title of Mr. This way we could keep the identity with the social fabric. BOB GRONDAHL Steak special no special DEAR MS. MILLER: This letter is in reference to an advertisement being carried in the GAMECOCK. In the ad, the Ponderosa Steak Barn offers a Tuesday night steak special to students at a reduced price. After seeing this ad in the GAMECOCK, I decided to take advantage of this offer, and I went out and ordered two student specials. I was not charged the discount price but the full price. After discovering the mistake, I explained to the cashier that I had been charged too much and a refund was requested. My request was denied. After trying to explain the situation and again receiving no satisfaction, I ex plained that I was totally dissatisfied with the treatment I was receiving and requested a full refund. The cashier, who I later found out was the manager, in formed me that he was going to call the police -- I was left standing there for five minutes or so feeling quite embarrassed and insulted while the police were contacted. On his return he informed me that I would be credited with the dif ference between the prices. To receive this money, I will now have Buy One Fisi (with French andi1m GE brazier This ad must be presented at time of to purchase pnother dinner on which the discount will be given. After rude and discourteous treatment I received, a return to the Ponderosa Steak Barn is highly unlikely. The obvious policy behind of fering a reduced price student special and advertising it in the student newspaper is to generate the student trade and promote good will. Considering the treatment I received, it should be asked whether it is in the best interests of the student body for the GAMECOCK to continue ad vertising for the Pondrosa Steak Barn. Please consider the situation and re-evaluate your advertising, keeping the interests of the students in mind. RICHARD A. POZNIKO Please spell my name right DEAR MS. MILLER: In one of your issues of last week (Friday, February 11, 1972) my name was incorrectly printed. In the article concerning reim bursement of campaign ex penditures to candidates of last Senatorial elections, my name was printed "Mike Amick." This should be corrected to "Cecil (Mack) Amick." CECIL M. AMICK, JR. SCPIRG again DEAR MS. MILLER: I hesitate to continue harping on Nader's SCPRIG organization. However, I feel compelled to continue until the facts are straight and the issue is cleared of the smoke cast off from the sputtering (and polluting) SCPRIG PR engine. There is the question of fraud. If a person is free that means he is free to support those issues, ser vices or things which he values, and conversly, not to be forced to support those issues, services or things which he does not value. SCPRIG's proposed financing method is an attempt to hinder the freedom of choice which the foundation fo personal freedom. It is an attempt to obtain money by default (that is, keeping all the unclaimed dollars after the refund i Nak Deluxe fries) ed. Coke T ONE FREE Offer good all week ouly at 1366 Rosewood Dr. Offer Expires March 15, 1972 wm- v WU period) a form of fraud. And let us not be a party to fraud. SCPIRG next makes the gran diose statement that they have gone to the students to approve the tax. The approach made via petitions capitalizes on student apathy. And indeed just how much support was really shown by the signatures on the petitions? The petitions have not been verified as to whether the signatures are (1) of real studeits,2) of people at the university and (3) if they were obtained without pressure. Indeed %/ to 3/4 of the petitions should be ruled invilid and thrown out. Why? Because, SCPRIG collected at least that many signatures in places that they aware were off limits. SCPRIG circulated petitions in the time lines, at the exit, and inside the coliseum. YAF had documented proof of these flagrant and purposeful violations of the rules as set down by Dean Robert Alexander. But yet there is no action taken against this crime against the students. What do the petitions prove? Only that SCPRIG is able to violate the rules and regulations of the University with impunity. And yes, my friends, let us play the statistical game. SCPRIG is caught in a trap. They admit that refund takers were high in some places. At Oregon Southern Universtiy (OSU) 22 per cent of the student body requested a refund. At Oregon Southern College the number supporting SCPRIG dropped from some 15,000 students the first semester to some 750 students the second semester. However, at some places SCPRIG did better. At Portland State University (PSU) they realized the key was to have poor publicity - one small ad in the school paper right before the event. Between poor publicity and being hassled only 3 per cent asked for a refund. Yes, SCPRIG might be willing to help us to cross the street. But, in the process it is sure that they would cut off our legs. I think some people have decided it is easier to try to hide or distort the facts than to be truthful to the students who have to pay. YAF does not have all the answers, but at least it is trying to get some answers and at least it does not engage in fraud. MICHAEL TRINKLEY Letters policy We print all letters we receive. The only thing we ask is that the writer include his name, signature and address (this is in case of verification purposes). Please try to type the letter on a 65-space line. The letter should be double-spaced. We will withhold a name only if a valid reason is enclosed with the letter.
