Neil Young has released a new
album entitled "Harvest."
-It has in it almost all the styles
that Neil has used through the
years. He also has some new
things, too. Among them a new
publishing company, (Silver
Fiddle), a new record material,
(Dynaflex) and a new recording
technique (Quadrasonic).
Neil has another backup group,
too. Crazy Horse was replaced by
the Stray Gators, a steel guitar
group.
One of its members is Jack
Nitzsche, the man who has
arranged and produced for Neil
since his first solo album.
Other performers on "Harvest"
is Rolling
1968. Prior to that, he had taught in
the Columbia and Sumter County
Schools.
Most recently, he was director of

are people like Crosby, Stills and

Taylor, although they just do
backup vocal work.
Most of the songs on "Harvest"
are done with the Stray Gators but
there is one that was recorded live
at UCLA and two that were done
with the London Symphony Or
chestra.
The weight of the symphonic
arrangements lay almost ex
clusively on the strings with an
oboe seeming to be the only non
stringed instrument used. This
coupled with the fact that Neil had
to try to project his soulful but thin
voice over the thundering strings
could have made for a real
disaster, but it didn't.

and the thrust and meaning of his
lyrics saved it, especially in the
song "A Man Needs A Maid"
which reflects the frustration and
regret that Neil had over his
marriage. The strings and lone
oboe point up his feelings of
loneliness and regret.
There is also a song against hard
drugs, "The Needle and the
Damage Done," which says in part
"Every Junkie's like a setting
-sun."
And the South. Following close
behind "Southern Man" is the song
"Alabama" which in part,
"Alabama You got the rest of the
Union to help you along-What's
going wrong?"
It took Neil a long, long time to
get this album out and he may
have gone a little overboard with
his self-indulgence.
In this album he uses the styles
from his past. From the
Springfield, to CSNY, to his own
albums. This album is 'truly a
Harvest of Neil Young's style. It is
an album that should be heard and
owned.
