Athletics isappoint blacks DEAR MS. MILLER: We are two black students at USC who recently witnessed several of the basketball games and were highly disappointed because the team won the games. Why? Because we as black students fell that we have not been represented fully on the teams here at Carolina. Yes, it is nice of Frank McGuire to have Casey Manning, a black player on the team because he really adds color to the bench. He has even played in a couple of games for ap proximately two minutes out of the entire season. One begins to question the likely possibility of this guy being promoted to water boy. He at least could see action during the game. It is really strange how this guy Manning, who was the number one player in his state in high school can only play approximately two minutes in the entire season and even have no more than a 2.0 average. Wow, that is fantastic how Frank has managed to find a way to push Casey from over a 30 average to a 2.0. We wonder if McGuire is still using the excuse that Casey is still recuperating from an operation that he has the first of the fall semester or is it that McGuire still believes that blacks are jungle bunnies. Is McQuire afraid to mar the image of the lily-white starting five, "The Great White Hope," with a black superstar? No. Master McGuire has the white racists pushing him. He is not afraid of a bunch of inferior blacks who only know how to climb trees. Master McGuire is certainly not prejudiced. We think that he just does not believe in dissatisfying the "Strom Thurmonds" of South Carolina. The blacks of USC were forced, just like everyone else, to pay the expenses for a team that we do not wish to support, to finance or even comprehend the existence of. We do not want to see or support an all white team. Yet still, we are compelled to support a team which we cannot be proud of. This type of image is not only seen in the basketball team. Moreover, it is seen in the football team as well. It is interesting to note that Jackie Brown finally got a chance to start, after sitting out a great deal of his sophomore year when he obviously had the talent to play more. Black students here wonder how much the Clyde Agnews and C. A. Wilsons will play next year after having what one might call ex ceptionally good freshman seasons. Until the athletic department recruits more blacks on the teams, really make them working mechanisms on the teams and give them an equal chance to start, we the black students will always be dissatisfied. We are proud of our black brothers. We feel that Casey and other blacks are just as good as the white players on the team. There are not too many activities geared toward the black students here at Carolina. Therefore, we feel that as long as there are Frank McGuires, Paul Dietzels and their strange types of strategies we, the black students, will never truth fully be able to really support the teams. "We refuse to accept the view that Carolina is so tragically bound to the starless night of racism that the bright daylight of equal par ticipation in the sports can never become a reality." The above is a slight modification of one of the late Dr. Martin Luther King's many quotes. MARJORIE MILLER MICHAEL POWE Hope article denounced DEAR MS. Why doesn't the GAMECOCK stray from a favorite topic of our infamous local newspapers? Mr. Hope is like, "all those people who really don't like all that hair in their mouth but are afraid to get a haircut," when he fa;. to deal with significant issues and instead plays on the very tired cliches once again. No longer is Mr. Hope being controversial; only boring. I would like to see Mr. Hope return to his previous style of journalism which was informative, helpful and entertaining. We recently were afforded the opportunity to attend our residence hall beer-feast and were surprised to see our fine "Christian athletes" engaging in excessive con sumption of alcoholic beverages, not to mention the physical in timidation of bartenders in order to gain access to whole bottles of wine. We don't mean to complain; however, the incidents of "alleged atheletes" dumping beer on residents and breaking wine bottles against the wall are a bit disconcerting to us, to say the least. Although we wholehearted support this athletic community through our forced fees, we must request that these "characters" who attend our parties behave within the realm of society's ac cepted rules of behavior. We feel this way because it was our funds which paid for the food and refreshments which they so heartily consumed. We conclude with the request that these individuals begin to show the other students on this campus the same consideration which they take for granted from us.
