Letters Sneakers, cats, comic books DEAR MS. MILLER: What is Mr. Albers' problem (The Gamecock, January 28, 1972)? How can anyone dare compare Rod McKuen with Yevgeny Yevtushenko? McKuen and Yevtushenko are both fan tastic composers but that is where the similarity efids; they are authors of different types of literature. McKuen would pack another 5,000 listeners, McKuen is that kind of man. In less than four years McKuen's books of poetry have sold in excess of four million copies in hardcover, making him the best selling poet not only of his age but probably of every other era as well. Yes, Mr. Albers, sneakers+ pussycats dollars (just ask Mr. McKuen). Mr. Albers, a reviewer of comic books would be more com mensurate with your ability as a critic. CLINT DROZE Euphradian Society oldest? DEAR MS. MILLER: It was with interest that our Society read the front page article concerning the Euphradian Society (hereinafter called the Society across the way) in the January 31, 1972 issue of the Gamecock. The Society across the way is not the oldest student organization on the University of South Carolina campus. It is the second oldest. In 1805 there existed on campus an organization known as the Philomathic Society. By 1806 said Philomathic Society had grown too large- the result being that the Philomathic Society ceased to exist, and was replaced by the Clariosophic Society and the Society across the way. The Clariosophic Society was organized approximately two weeks before the other. Inasmuch as your article con cerned matters other than the age of the Society across the way, and since our two Societies were founded by brothers, it is felt that the following should be mentioned concerning the Clariosophic Society. 1. AS TO WOMEN: By con stitutional amendment, approved by the Clariosophic Society on December 1, 1970, Article I Section I was amended by striking the word "male". Thus eligibility for membership is open to both men and women. 2. AS TO GRADUATE ON ENTERPRISES tion with udent Government rits JCKE R our concert - CAFETERIA 1, 8 p.m. )ates FRFF STUDENTS: At the present time there are more graduate student members of the Clariosophic Society than there are tn dergraduate members. Mem bership is open to both groups. 3. AS TO RACE: Nowhere in the Clariosophic Constitution (nor in the By-Laws) is race or religion mentioned. Membership is open to all persons. 4. MEMBERSHIP: It should be added that, as in most organizations, before a person becomes a member such person must be found acceptable. This is done by vote (secret ballot). In conclusion the Clariosophic Society feels that the Gamecock should historically research its own past. All organizations, in cluding the Gamecock, owe a debt of birth to someone. The Clariosophic Society was in strumental in the paper's foun ding, and believes this information should be permanently in corporated within the Gamecock letterhead box located on your editorial page. HUMPHREY H. CHILDERS PRESIDENT 'Our gang' does little DEAR MS. MILLER: Your recent editorial on Harry Walker and our Student Govern ment made me wonder what our Student Government ac complishes. I could not think of anything. Student Government is at best an advisory group. But when was the last time its advice did any good? The only two changes of any importance around campus (the changing of Baker from male to female housing and the extension of open house hours) came about -by a petition cam paign. Instead of eliminating the salary of th( senators and executives, which has been suggested before, I propose the abolition of these of fices entirely. Students can still circulate petitions if the need arises, and the energetic people who want to work can go ahead and work without having to bother with being elected. TONYSTEELE For YAF (No. 1) DEAR MS. MILLER Yes, you can believe what SC PIRG says. Why? Because, no matter how hard one tries it is impossible to keep SCPIRG on the topic at hand. SCPIRG seems to have an unsatisfiable desire to change the subject whenever a question has been raised for which they have no answer, The methods SCPIRG use vary at times they inject the con versation with emotionalism and open-ended words. At other times they use the old tactic of name calling. Anything to keep the truth from coming out. I have a few comments con cerning Mr. Brahm's letter of January 26th. He has never come up to me and asked if I was a member of YAF. Indeed, if he had I would have given him an honest - KLEEN 1320 Maim Sftet * l-hour cleaning * 4-hour Laumdry Service Me.d.ny thbtru . answer. But, he prefers instead to make it appear that to be a member of YAF automatically disqualifies one from having a worthwhile opinion. I might ask Mr. Brahm if he is, in any way, connected with SCPIRG? But, this makes no real difference. SCPIRG is attempting to build its case on a YAF versus SCPIRG basis. I reject this fuzzy and illogical thinking. The question here transcends conservative - leftist affiliations. The question involved is one of much greater magnitude. Does SCPIRG have the right to demand student support of a vested interest group? However, trying to evade the question at hand is typical of SCPIRG. What is it they have to hide? I also read with amusement Ms. Stirling's letter concerning her remarkable undercover work. She should be complimented on "digging up" all that "damaging evidence." It is too bad she did not take the time to get the facts straight by reading YAF's prepared statement given to the student affairs committee at that time. YAF stated that they did not expect to get the money, but were only trying to prove that the fun ding procedure was inequitable. Ms. Stirling's whole letter sounds very similar to Nader's tactics of digging up irrelevant points in hopes of making everyone forget the important matter at hand. MICHAEL TRINKLEY For YAF (No. 2) DEAR MS. MILLER SCPIRG, better named (Slightly Constipated, Perverted, Im becillic, and Ridiculous Grits), has answered YAF accusations by saying that if 51 per cent of the student body signs a petition backing SCPIRG, it is right and just to force taxes on 49 per cent of the students (about 7,500 students). SCPIRG admits that its own success is dependent upon "the continuing contributions and participation of a great number of students." Does this mean that their presently proposed $3.00 tax might be $10.00 or $20.00 in 1973. SCPIRG also says that "It will be very small, with a limited budget, and therefore must be selective in choosing its issues." This sounds very familiar, as in Oregon, OSPIRG chose to investigate national defense contractors (Astrex Inc., Hughes Aircraft Co., Textron Inc., etc.) SCPIRG promises a refund, at Portland State University (Oregon) students were short changed-instead of the promised amount, they received only 85 per cent. Can we be assured of a full refund? Why can't SCPIRG rely on voluntary donations in stead of forced taxation? SCPIRG has a history of 'great' support. After the massive publicity campaign, OSPIRG was thrown off at least three campuses in Oregon. At Mt. Hood College and Southwest Oregon C.C. the administration threw PIRG off campus, and at Oregon Technical Institute the students voted PIRG off campus. In Rhode Island the students at Brown University voted down PIRG. Although i don't agree with all YAF policies, I cannot help but admire their attempt to uncover the fraudulent practices of PIRG.
