The personal income of all South
Carolinians reached a record high
during the third quarter of 1971,
and the total real purchasing
power of the state's residents rose
a little more than one per cent.
At seasonally adjusted annual
rates for the third quarter of 1971,
the personal income of South
Carolinians climbed to a new high
of $8.4 billion, according to Dr. Olin
S. Pugh of USC's Bureau of
Business and Research.
This increase, Pugh said,
represents a gain of nearly two per
cent over the $8.2 billion recorded
in the second quarter of 1971 and a
gain of five per cent over the $8
billion persoani income total for
the year's first quarter.
"Taking into consideration the
fact that prices rose about three
fourt hs of one per cent in the third
quarter of 1971," Pugh said, "the
lot al real purchasing power of
South Carolinians rose about one
and one-fourth per cent."

by the U.S. Department of Com
merce, Pugh noted that the state's
income advance in 1971's third
quarter significantly outpaced the
1.4 per cent rise in the nation as a
whole and matched that of the
Southeast region.
Pugh said among South Carolina
industries the largest third-quarter
income gains, expressed at annual
rates, were those of farm
operators (42 million), manu
facturing employees (32 million),
and wage earners in wholesale and
retail trade ($24 million).
The advances in manufacturing,
he said, were concentrated mainly

Pugh also pointed out that South
Carolina's $8.4 billion third quarter
income flow represents a
significatnt recovery from the lou
point of the 1970 recrssion. In the
fourth quarter of 1970, he said
personal income in the state
lotaled $7.8 billion, about $60(
million less than that of 1971's third
quarter.
The state's advance of 8.3 per

Pugh also noted the major
sources contributing to the exV
pansion during these first 10
months of 1971 were manufac

transfer payments.
Income from farming, he said,
rose $75 million at seasonally

of 1971, representing a recovery
from a particularly depressed
point in the last quarter of 1970.
