USC Riker's 42 points lead 100-77 win By GARY WEST Sports Writer NEW YORK-Carolina, behind the scoring of Tom Riker and an aggressive zone defense, shot past Fordham, 100-77, here Thursday night in Madison Square Garden. Riker scored a career high of 42 points and was 19 of 21 from the field, including a phenomenal 10 of 10 in the second half. The Gamecocks opened in a 2-1-2 zone defense which forced Ford ham to take the outside shot and the Rams could only connect on 33 per cent of their shots in the first half. Fordham grabbed the eary lead, 2-0, on a jumper from the right corner by Bart Woytowicz, and held the lead until Riker hit from the left side with 16:38 remaining in the first half, knot ting the score at eight all. USC grabbed the lead for good at 12-10 with 15:46 on a spinning hook by Rick Adylett. Then Riker and Danny Traylor combined for eight of the Gamecocks' next ten points, as they opened a 22-14 lead. With Carolina controlling the boards and Fordham unable to crack the Gamecocks tenacious zone defense, USC built up its largest lead of the first period, 44 21 with 1:05 on the clock. Traylor continually harassed the smaller Rams, forcing them to change their shot trajectory in an attempt to avoid his shot blocking tactics, and pulling down ten rebounds in the first half. Carolina shot 58 per cent in the first half, aided greatly by Riker's nine of 11 percentage for 19 points. Fordham made a momentary comeback at the outset of the second half, cutting the USC lead down to 53-39 with 16:09 remaining, but the Gamecocks outscored the Rams 8-0 in the next two minutes and won going away. Carolina, which shot 60 per cent from the field for the game, played what Coach Frank McGuire described as their best game of the season. "This is the best game offensively and defensively combined that we have played this season. I never dreamed we would score as much as we did. We beat a good team tonight at their home court, and it's great to win in New York. "We have been waiting for Riker to have a great game all season and he finally had one tonight. His hand is coming along real well. He played without the splint tonight," explained the coach. "We were not trying to run the score up. We just couldn't sub stitute against their press," said McGuire. Riker paced all scorers with his 42 points. Aydlett and Kevin Joyce both added 15 points to the Gamecock total, while Traylor, who sat out 13 minutes of the second period after obtaining his fourth foul, was the only other Gamecock In double scoring figures with 10. Traylor also contributed 15 rebounds in his limited action. .... .. . :nrps Rams;f Ar ffyM USC's Tom Riker RENT-TV's or STER EO's 4 Color or B & W WITH PURCHASE OPTION Furniture Also Available with Student Discobunt METRO L.EASE .2738 Devine St. Columbia, S.C. ________TeleIhone - 253-0346 aces Huskies High scoring NIU to test.Gamecocks By JIM HERSH Sports Writer When a team is third in the nation in scoring and still loses ten of their 23 games, you figure In order to win more often they had better Improve their defense, right? Wrong. Northern Illinois has another way. Last year the Huskies scored 92.7 points per game, third only to Jacksonville and Kentucky, but they also gave up 86.6 points every contest. This year NIU is averaging an astronomical 100.2 points and is still giving up a relatively high number of points, 82.8 a game. But the Huskies, ranked 19th in the nation in the latest AP poll, are 12-1 and when they play the Gamecocks in Chicago Stadium Saturday, NIU will put their 11 game win-streak on the line. Northern Illinois lost to Purdue in their second outing of the season but since then have whipped everyone they have played, including Indiana who was fifth ranked when the two teams met. "Against Purdue we still weren't sure how good we were,"' NIU head coach Tom Jorgenson said.
