Defending for the Purple Eagles is Marshall Wingate. ye in the Keyhole By Doug Williams Sports Editor Since the NCAA recently passed a rule allowing fresh men to compete in varsity competition the question has arisen concerning the future of freshman sports in general. Many major conferences, including the South western, have expressed an Interest In the rule, while others have offered various alternatives. The overwhelming opinion is that the new rule will allow smaller schools that could never hope to compete on the level of a Texas or Notre Dame, a better chance in recruiting. Most small institutions are on low budgets, and are feeding rather meager amounts to freshmen sports. Furthermore, small schools would no longer have to recruit an entire freshman team; just recruit iby position. "I definitely think that the ruling will aid smaller schoolg," said USC frosh football coach, Jackie Powers. "By not having to recruit a full freshman team, I mean, every position plus reserves, they can go out and get four tackles or six guards, whatever ey need. "But by and large," Powers continued, "the large schools are not going to be helped. There lust aren't that .many people out of high school who are capable of playing varsity sports right off the bat. And I don't think the caliber of any sport will suffer, since only the very best kids are going to be in th,ere." In any event, the rule has both good and bad points. One must admit that as the quality of high school coaching and facilities increase, it only follows that prep players will become more proficient. Fordham was supposed to be facing a year of rebuilding after the loss of All-America Charlie Yelverton and coach Digger Phelps, but the Rams record of 11-4 indicates more promise than a year of rebuilding. The Rams defeated Carolina, 100-90, in the consolation game of the Eastern Regionals, as Charles pumped in 22 points for the Rams while Tom Riker lead all scorers with 39 points. Fordham, which featured a scrappy team with excellent shooters and tremendous leaping ability last season in posting a record of 26-3 still pattern them selves around this type of play. Coach Bill Loving, who scouted Fordham, expects another close battle from the super-quick Rams. "Fordham is a very quick and aggressive team with good shooters and tremendous jumpers. They are very similar to the Fordham team that Carolina faced last year in the Eastern Regionals." The Gamecocks, now at the mid point of their season with thirteen more games to go, are being paced by Kevin Joyce with a 17.5 average, followed by Riker (16.4) and Danny Traylor (14.8). Rick Aydlett (9.7) and Brian Winters (9.5) round out the top five scorers. Traylor is leading in the rebounding department with a 11.6 average, followed by Riker (10.9) and Aydlett (7.2). The Gamecocks, who have been plagued by turnovers quite often this season, will probably face one of the best pressing teams in the country, as Fordham usually goes with an all court press to take advantage of their quickness. Carolina continues its road trip, facing Northern Illinois this Saturday afternoon at Chicago Stadium. The Huskies, averaging 100.3 points a game as a team, are one of the nation's highest scoring teams and have suffered only one loss, to Purdue. Northern, which recently broke into the top twenty, has beaten 5th ranked Indiana by 14 points and should be ready for the Gamecocks after coming back off a two week layoff this week.
