USC SCHOLARSHIPS Applications for USC scholar ships for academic year 1972-73 must be received by the Student Financial Aid Office by Feb. 15. FICTION CONTEST Prize money of $250, $125 and $75 will be awarded in the 15th Annual Fiction Contest for Young Writers sponsored by "The Carolina Quarterly" in cooperation with the North Carolina Arts Council. The fiction contest is established to encourage and reward ex perimental writing by writers under 30 who have not published a book-length manuscrapt. The deadline, is March 1. Original, unpublished stories must be in standard manuscript form and must be labelled as contest entries. If a stamped, self-addressed envelope Is provided, stories will be returned. Maximum length is 6,000 words; there is no minimum length. Winner: will be notified by mail and winnii g stories will appear in the spring, 1972, "Carolina Quarterly." "Today's student is under more pressure than he has ever been." Only if he allows himself to be pressured. If he will take stock of the situation and work out his schedule of activities in a systematic, orderly way, he will not be under undue pressure. If he is weak enough to rely on drugs to help him out of a difficult situation, he will find the pressure mounting steadily. When he recovers from the effect of the drugs, he will find all his problems still facing him and usually multiplied. Keep in mind that exams are never difficult for the person who is prepared for them. They may occur in varying degrees of thoroughness. Even a simple exam is difficult for the student (and I use the term loosely) who has not done his home work. Exams are fair (except. perhaps, for oc casional" meanies"). For the good of the student, morally, educationally, educationally, and psychologically (i. e. for his peace of mind in years after his golden opportunity for an education has passed) exams must stay.
