"There were no really out standing times set at this meet, except for USC's Casey Claflin in the 200-yard backstroke, but It was a well represented field, all were good teams fairly equally ma tched," explained head swimming mentor Allan Gentry. Claflin turned in another fine performance winning two events. "Florida State also has a real strong, extremely tough squad, they beat Georgia earlier this season down at Florida State. Of course, we beat them (FSU) last year so they'll have no trouble getting up for this meet'' remarked Gentry. Both meets promise to be ex citing and any Interested people wishing to see an exhibition of excellean swimmming and diving are urged to attend. As for Carolina, "They have been working very hard lately. We thought maybe at Vanderbilt they might have been a little tired, but they swam very well and gave us - 100 pe cent effort all the time." The Chicken Coup (Continued from Page 9) University of Maryland's center, Len Elmore once said that It is more advantageous to have goaltending called on defense than it is to just let the shot go, merely for the pyschological effects. Traylor disagrees with this philosophy of defense however,"A lot of -the time when I goaltend I find that the shot might not have been suc cessful had I just let it go. Blocking shots is one thing which you like to do, but if you goal tend, than it's just an easier two points for your opponent." Traylor is averaging 11.6 rebounds a contest. It's chiefly been Traylor's rebounding and defensive talents which have eased the criticisms from those who had expected him to perform better offensively this year. Traylor's goals are those which one would expect from a seven-footer. He simply desires 'to become an All America. "More or less my goal is for the team, however. I want the team to go farther than any other USC team has ever gone. "I think we can win all the rest of our games. Houston will be tough, Northern Illinois is tough, and Clemson could be a tough team. We shouldn't lose anymore. "But first we have got to get everything together. We are still feeling each other out. Most of the players on this year's team did start at one time or another last year, but we have still got to learn to work together," explained Traylor. "It will take five or six more games before we become tight and play our kind of ball. We don't want to peak this early in the year," Traylor said. Apparently, with the kind of games the Gamecocks have been playing of late (those two late comeback victories and the loss to Iowa) the team has not yet peaked. Traylor admits that the recent play of USC leaves much to be desired. '"It was an effective loss (the 91-85 los. to Iowa) for our own good. We haven't really played well in the past few games. We needed the jolt to realize that we can't come back against every team. I think it will help us in the Fordham game." As Traylor continues to improve, so do the Gamecocks, and hopefully the two will reach a peak together, either sometime this season or next. Learn to defend yourself.
