Kevin Joyce scored 26 second
half points, leading Carolina to a
come-from-behind, 80-69 win over
the Purple Eagles of Niagara
Wednesday night in the Coliseum.
Joyce, who had hit only three of
seven from the field and one of two
from the free throw line in the first
half, ripped the nets on 11-14 field
goal attempts and added four more
from the line during the final
period.
For the second game in a row,
the Gamecocks fell behind early.
Niagara's Marshall Wingate hit a
jump shot with 4:16 gone in the
game to wipe out a 5-4 Carolina
lead. Six-eleven Jim Hegmann
added another basket, as did Jim
Chassar, the Purple Eagles
moving into a 10-5 lead.
With nine minutes left in the
opening period, Rick Aydlett
scored on a set shot for USC's last
basket in the two minutes to follow.
During the Gamecock cold spell,
Niagara reeled off seven straight
points, gaining their largest ad
vantage of the game at the 7:11
mark, 30-13.
Carolina fought back in the
closing moments of the first half,
but was unable to halt the Eagle
scoring, and found themselves on
the short end of a 41-31 halftime
score.
After 12 first half turnovers and
a miserable 31.4 per cent showing
from the field, USC roared back.
The Gamecocks limited Niagara to
a mere ten points in the first eleven
minutes of the half, shot almost 55

Aydlett dropped three foul shots
with 14:44 remaining in the game
to knot the score at 46-all. Joyce
ihen sunk a long jumper that put
Carolina in the lead for the first
time since early in the contest.
During that five minute period, the
Purple Eagles could manage only
five points, as the Gamecocks
tallied 15. Brian Winters paced
Carolina early, with six markers.
But Joyce was just starting his
remarkable show.
He hit two jumpers in 43 seconds,
putting USC ahead, 50-46, with
13:17 left in the game. Wingate
scored seconds later, but Joyce
again hit two more successive

more within 48 seconds to give the
Gamecocks a ten point, 61-51,
advantage.
Almost two minutes later, he
struck on a layup, as did team

Mousa converted two from the line
to give USC a 70-59 lead, and an
apparent easy win.
But Niagara's Bob Miller scored
on t wo quick layups and Cleve
Royster scored twice from the
chaity stripe, narrowing the
Carolina lead to five, 70-65.
However, Joyce pumped in four
si raight points and ended the game
by scoring on two layups to
overcome the Eagles' bid.
