A Russ Yevgeny Yevtushenko, the Russian poet, will begin a poetry reading program tour of the United States Jan. 24 with an appearance in USC's Coliseum. Sponsored by the University Union's Lec tures Committee, the program will begin at 8 p.m. and is free to the public. Yevtushenko will be introduced by James Dickey, USC's poet-in residence who has adapted several English tran slations of his works. That is the chorus to the song American Pie by Don McLean. The song has been rated number one by almost every poll. Next Sunday, Jan. 23, the Con cert Committee of the University Union will present McLean in Bachelor h top musica "Company," the multiple award winning musical comedy, will be presented in the Carolina Coliseum at 8 p.m., Jan. 31 by the University Union Artist Series Committee. Directed and produced by Harold Prince with' music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, this Broadway play received the Best Musical Award from the New York Drama Critics in 1970 and six Tony Awards in 1971. "Company" is a tart, tender and sophisticated portrayal of marriage in a contemporary urban setting. Allen Case, who replaces George Chakiris, leads as an eligible bachelor who is the favorite guest of five married "matchmaking" couples. Julie Wilson co-stars as one of the wives who attempts to push Case toward matrimony by stressing its joys. Due to the limited number of available tickets, USC students must pick up their tickets by this Friday, at the Russell House Ticket Office. This priority is given to students who may pick up their tickets free with a student I.D. Faculty also may pick up their tickets and purchase tickets for their Im mediate families at this time. After Jan. 21, tickets will go on sale to the public. Ticket prices are e'3 for, non-U.S.C. students. and $4 lan is Ci Boys, a well-known English actor, complete the program. Clay Riley, Lectures Committee chairman, said the tour was arranged by Doubleday and Co., Inc., publishers of the poet's latest book, "Stolen Ap ples.'" RiLey said the USC Coliseum will be the 'rgest hall in which Yevtus, anko will appear on the tour, which begins here and ends Feb. 18 at Macalester College in Minnesota. Yevtushenko Is scheduled to appear with four other Lean in C4 spring s( concert at Township Auditorium. The cost is $2. for students and $3 for the general public. "This should be a really good start for our spring concert season," Tom DiFiglio, committee chairman, said. "This spring we have something for everybody. There seems to be a concert that. every person is particularly interested in." The upcoming concerts include B. B. King and Curtis Mayfield, McKendree Spring, New York Rock Ensemble and others. Born in Siberia in 1933, Yevtushenko became in ternationally known in 1961 with the publication of "Babi Yar," a poem dealing with Soviet anti semitism. Since then, his works on subjects such as Vietnam, the Kent State deaths and Louis Armstrong have drawn additional world attention. :ncert; ason Zappa was attacked and thrown into an orchestra pit in London two weeks ago and suffered injuries that forced cancellation of his engagement. The Concert Committee is working now to secure groups for a "mini-festival" in the spring.
