Counseling Bureau offers new courses Four courses in improving reading; notetaking, listening and briefhand skills are being offered for USC students by the Counseling Bureau. The Effective Reading course is a programmed taped course which takes approximately 12 hours to complete. Designed to give the student a higher level of reading speed while improving his comprehension, the techniques taught in the program will enable students to make their reading more efficient. The price oftthis course is $15. Effective Notetaking is also a taped course. This course teaches the student to be selective in what is recorded and how to arrange notes. Administration of this course takes about six hours and costs $10. Effective Listening centers on the registry and retention of spoken information. The charge is $5 and requires four hours to complete. Briefhand, a systematic approach to shortening words, helps students develope their own method of taking notes. This program requires six hours and the charge is $10. To enroll in the courses call 777-5223 or stop by the Counseling Bureau in the Pendleton Building. At least 10 students are needed to begin class. Gamecock The GAMECOCK is published tri-weekly during the fall and spring semesters with the exception of University holidays and exam periods. In addition, the number of scholarships for the U.S. Air Force has been raised from 5,500 to 6,500; and for the first time, applicants to the Air Force ROTC two-year program will be eligible for a share of t hese scholarships. The new legislation raises the subsistence allowance for cadets from $50 to $100 and it will be retroactive to Nov. 15, the end of the wage-price freeze. This allowance will be en*yed by all cadets in the last two years of ROTC and to all of those on ROTC scholarships. The increase in AFROTC scholarships will enable 1,000 additional studerts across the nation to receive benefits that pay for tuition, fees and provide an allowance for books. At the same time they will reeive the $100 a month sub sistance pay to help defray ex penses for food and lodging. The prerequisites are to pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test and an Air Force physical examination, meet a board of Air Force officers and successfully complete a six-week summer USC, Medica conclude join USC and the Medical University of South Carolina have concluded an agreement to establish a joint curriculum in premedicine and medicine which will give a student a BS degree from USC in three years and an MD degree from the Medical University in two more years.
