Gamec Carolina i in Pitt fie BY TEDDY HEFFNER Sports Editor PITTSBURGH - Before the era of the coliseum USC used to get some mighty big basketball upsets over some highly-ranked teams, with the old field house serving almost as a sixth (or seventh?) player. The Caroling field house seated no more than 4,000 and it seemed that they shared the players' benches. That can be unnerving. The tables turned when USC took off for the rolling hills of Pennslyvania. Pittsburgh had their own ren dition of a field house and on game night it was packed to the rafters with 4,454 people. "I can see how they (Pitt sburgh) can bring a nationally ranked team in here and beat them," USC ticket manager Ray Faircloth said. But the Gamecocks didn't fold and used fine efforts from Kevin Joyce and Tom Riker and good use of the zone defense to hand the Panthers a much worse beating then the final 10-point, 0-59, spread shows. Bobby Carver also turned in an excellent effort with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Danny Traylor, who took only two shots from the floor, added nine rebounds. "We feel very fortuhate to come here and beat a good Pitt team McGuire said. "Anytime you win on the road you have to be satisfied. They have good ball players and they should. They recruit metropolitan talent just like we do." All but three of the Pitt players played prep ball in downtown Pittsburgh. Kent Scott led the way for the losers with 14 points, most in the second half from outside over the USC zone. But he was the only one that was getting the ball in the hole from long range. "Anytime you go to a zone you are taking a chance," McGuire said. "Every team will have at least one guy who can hit over the zone. McGuire also had some com ments about the turnovers that plauged USC in the early part of the season and has not yet been completely corrected. With Tom Riker, USC's leading scorer, out with an injured hand, the seven foot Traylor responded with the best performance of his career. Traylor's credentials for the night were pretty impressive, as he scored 37 points, pulled down 20 rebounds and also blocked six of his opponents shots. Coach Frank McGuire was pleased with his big center's play. "Danny played his most consistent game tonight and made some beautiful moves inside." McGuire was also pleased with the per formance of guard Bob Carver, who pitched in 16 points and played a fine floor game. "Bobby played a good game on defense. He had the key defensive matchup against Richie Garner and held him to seven points." With the Gamecocks fast break working to perfection the 116 points was the second highest total in the four year history of the Carolina Coliseum. Traylor received strong support from Rick Aydlett and Brian Winters, who both con tributed 14 points, Ed Peterson 13 and Kevin Joyce and Rick Mousa, both eight. For Manhattan, Ron Manning was the only consistent player, scoring 23 points before fouling out with 9:39 left in the game. McGuire was also impressed with Manning, who gave away much height to the taller Traylor, but connected on 10 of 21 shots on some fine inside shooting. "Manning looked very good for them tonight but he just couldn't match Traylor's height." Mcduire was also delighted with the ever-improving play of his sophomores. "Winters is a great basketball player and I just laugh at the way Peterson shoots." Peterson, who continued his phenomenal shooting for the second straight game connecting on five of six shots, was com plimentary of his opponents and modest of his performance. "We wanted to win this game bad and just went out to play, because Manhattan is underrated~ Defensive wise I have to prove things that I'm poor in." When asked about Kevin Joyce's second sub par scoring per formance, McGuire responded, "Kevin is like a batter in a slump. All he has to do is keep shooting, and with his defense and rebounding he is invaluable to the team. The Gamecock mentor expects Riker to return to the hard wood against St. Bonaventure even though his hand won't be 100 per cent healed. "Riker could have played tonight, but I never play an injured player. He should be able to play against St. Bonaventure though he might have some dif ficulty rebounding with the injured hand." -..
