California rates as the
toughest opposition as Carolina
begins its national schedule
with the Cable Car Classic in
San Francisco tonight.
Joining the Gamecocks and
California will be unbeaten
Santa Clara, with two wins in
as many outings, and once
beaten San Francisco.
USC opens up with Santa
Clara after California and USF
tangle in the opener. But with
wins over Arizona and
nationally ranked Houston, the
Golden Bears have to be a top
contender for the tournament
crown.
The Bears are led by John
Coughran with a 20.5 scoring
average and Ansley Truitt,
who has been scoring at an 18.0
clip while grabbing 12
rebounds a game. Carl Meier
and Eric Long are the
playmakers, having handed
out 27 assists between them.
USC's opening opponent,
Santa Clara, has shot a
phenomenal 60.5 per cent from
the field in impressive vic
tories over the University of
California-Davis and Stanford.
Six-ten junior pivotman Mike
Stewart paces the Broncos
with a 21.0 scoring average,
hitting 19 of 26 shots from the
floor while grabbing 17
rebounds.
San Francisco also took the
measure of Stanford by a 76-67
margin, but fell to national
power Southern California 102
82. Santa Clara coach Carroll
Williams feels that,
"California and San Francisco
are both good teams and are
probably pretty even. I don't
know where we fit into the
field, but I do know that
Carolina is the team to beat."
The Gamecocks are paced
by a well-balanced offense,
indicated by the fact that all
five starters scored In double
figures during Carolina's 84-63
victory over Auburn last week.
Kevin Joyce led the way with
19 points, followed by Tom
Riker's 17, Rick Aydlett's 13,

Like almost every major college,
Carolina will play in a basketball
tournament during the Christmas
holiday. The Gamecocks will be
one of eight teams in the Quaker
City Classic, to be held Dec. 27-30
in Philadelphia.
Boston College, LaSalle,
Villanova, Massachusetts,
Manhatten, Tennessee, - and
Fairfield will join USC in the
holiday classic, which was won last
year by the University of Penn
sylvania.
Villanova is probably the
toughest team the Gamecocks will
see in the Quaker City. Head Coach
Jack Kraft has three starters back
from last year's NCAA runner-up
squad and the Wildcats won their
first three games this year.
Hank Siemiontkowski is in the
Wildcat spotlight after Howard
Porter graduated in the spring.
Siemiontkowski scored at a 15.8
clip last year and should do even
better this year now that Porter
has left . The 6-8 senior is in his first
year at center after playing two
years at forward.
The Wildcat guards are juniors
Ed Hastings and Tom Ingelsby.
Chris Ford, moving to forward
after scoring 13.8 points a game
last year at guard, is the one
forward, while Kraft has Joe
McDowell, Larry Moody, Larry
Storm, and John Gaspar as the
other forward possibility.
A veteran backcourt is the
highlight on the Massachusetts
line-up. Guards John Betancourt
and Mike Paglira carry the hopes
of the Redmen. The only other
returning starter is forward Tom
McLaughlin.
Boston College is in a rebuilding
year and is relying on several
sophomores to carry the team.

Jim Crawford is the lone starter

plorers, 20-7 last year, have
already lost two games in their
first three this year.
Tennessee is another team
rebuilding this year. Mike Ed
wards, with a 17 point average last
year, and 6-7 Lloyd Richardson are
the Vols key returnees.
Newcomers Len Kosmalski, 6-11,
guard John Snow, and Larry
Robinson are the other possible Vol
starters.
Four of Manhatten's starters
were on the team last year. The
tallest starter is Mike Moore, only
6-7, but the backcourt of Richie
Garner and Lorenza Tarvin is the
Jasper strength.
At Fairfield the backcourt of
George Groom, 20 point average
last year, and Bob Kelly carry the
Stags' hopes.
